I got this Acoustic Studio 3311 Monitors and people kept telling me they were white van trash, and every website I searched told me so. But I hooked them up and... Sure I AM VERY EARLY in my audio "life"? But these sound great to me. So... Yeah

By the way, there was no "sad sack" sales pitch, or anything like that. I went to go look at different speakers, and I saw these, I googled them, and saw they were considered "White van as hell" so I kinda turned away, but after hearing them, I decided to get them and they work great for my room.

As long as they were dirt cheap, good.
White Van speakers are hated because they are passed off as something they are not.

The sales pitch, by the guys in the white van is, "Hey, I ended up with an extra pair of (super great expensive speakers with a name that sounds like the good stuff) and I can let you have them cheap...for cash" or something close to that.

They are NOT high quality speakers and the name is misleading.

I have a set of white vans that I use on my test bench. They are actually pretty well made and sound really good. But if I fry them, no real lose. I'll just get some more at goodwill.

Enjoy them. Someday you will get better speakers, and then you'll get better speakers and soon, you will forget your first love.

I got not only one but few friends who have the white vanners and they like them too, to be honest they don't sound as bad as some people say for what they have in the cabinets
 
There is nothing necessarily wrong with white van speakers per se. It's just the outrageous claims made about them such as their power handling capability and unbelievable MSRP, even if it is printed right on the box.

from all the white van speakers I have heard, these are probably the best ones that I have heard, great party speakers, they can handle a lot of power

i have a pair of those home and I used them for testing

I'm really glad with the way these speakers are working for me. The bass was a little powerful so I through some different small bookshelf speakers on top of them, just sat them on top. Sounds amazing.
 
There's a couple of things you need to keep in mind. I don't know about these particular models, but some white van speakers can stress your amplifier to the point of failure because of poor electrical design. It can make the output transistors overheat and even cause a fire.

You say you are new to audio. I think you owe it to yourself to hear what really good, reasonably priced speakers sound like. It won't be easy, big box stores don't carry them and/or don't have a way to properly audition them. You'll need to find an audio specialty store, but they are becoming rare. Maybe someone in your circle of friends has a nice system.

Just like in all areas, if it sounds to good to be true, it is. Do your homework and only buy well known, well regarded products that have received good reviews. Buy smart and you'll save money in the long run.
 
I dunno - maybe if you took a picture that was useful we could make some decision - otherwise, its just a big blurry blotch of color ...

Anyone know why this would help? Are the bookshelf speakers just added weight to keep the cabs from ratteling? It sounds like they are not hooked up. But I could be wrong
 
I thought Grand Funk Railroad was pretty kick-ass at one time too. Then I heard some real music. ;)

And here I am, trying to re-capture my youth, looking for good Grand Funk Railroad vinyl....

Even with the blurry photo, I think I know those. They turn up here a LOT. I even ended up with some once. I gutted them and repurposed the drivers and eventually tossed everything. They are not bad. Right there with the 90s BPC rack system speakers that everyone put out.

Adding the small speakers changed the load on the amp. It takes more power to drive 2 sets. SO all the power that was going to one set is now being spread around. So you are sending less power to the bass driver on the big ones.

The kick against White Van speakers isn't just that they are inferior (although they often are), or that they make outrageous claims (which they generally do), it is the method by which they are originally sold; by appealing to the larceny that is in the heart of many seemingly-honest people who will buy what they THINK is stolen property in a New York second if they think they are not in danger of being arrested for possessing stolen property. Most confidence scams work by appealing to the criminal nature many people have and do not like to admit they have.

If you're not the original buyer of the White Van speakers of course, you are not part of the 'I am buying these believing them to be stolen because they are cheap' moral indictment.
 
They MUST be good. They are way larger than my computer screen.
But their clarity seems to be lacking.

That's my favorite band you're talkin' bout.
Honest.
Mel's bass used to growl and thunder.
Don's drums were not bad though many drummers are better.
And it took the "new" Grand Funk 3 guys to replace Mark Farner.
I'm just sayin....

They'd better not catch you saying that in a couple of the forums around here. That is, the "As long as you did not pay too much for them" part.

That said, I agree with all of your post. White van speakers aren't worth a whole lot, regardless of the price on the box, but they certainly aren't worthless.
 
Hey, MY first speakers were white van specials. It was the 80's, they were big, pretty, and had 12" white woofers.... Sounded damn good with Disco....

What did I know... all that mattered back then is how much bass I could get out of them. :D

But honestly, once I fried the tweeters and replaced them with fostex super tweeters, they actually sounded darn good!

I had them for many years. Got rid of them during a Bose phase.... THEN got into quality after that.

But I'll always remember my first white van specials. They rocked the house.

You received alot of good advice that you decided to ignore. You even said words to the effect that the 3311 were an obvious scam. Honestly I hope your happy but I have to say you should have listened to the advice that was given.
