Buy Technics SL-1200 MK2 for $150?

He called me today. Chill out. Plus, there aren't a whole lot of people looking for turntables in my area. There's like a total of 8 on my CL page whereas in other places there is pages upon pages of them.

Whoa there, You have been asking a bunch a questions about this and a few of us were concerned that you may have been running with the ball before you actually caught it. So with that being said an SL-1200 at $150 regardless of where you live will certainly sell and as long as the seller keeps his word you will be golden.

People here were just trying to make sure you got what you wanted.

Yeah. Sorry for sounding like a douche.

Also, the guy said he replaced the original slip mat with a foam mat. He said it's better for clamping/listening. Foam? Lol, I thought felt was the way to go...

Another thing if the person who answers the door says "Yo bitch" and has a huge gold chain around their neck walk away.

I was about to write, "Unless you realize that it's Isaac Hayes. Then start a conversation...(etc...)." Then it occurred to me that he is no longer with us. :tears: If it IS Isaac Hayes who answers the door, freak out and PRAY! :D

I'm also 16 and have a strict mother who wont let me pick it up by myself. I have been talking with the guy. He hasn't sold it. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Be grateful for your mother's concern. She's right; what would happen if that big dude with the huge gold chain suddenly pulled out a gun and said "just hand over the money" ... or worse --conditioned by his years in prison-- told you to "drop those pants and bend over, b*tch!" ?

I'm pretty sure you'll have a good experience with this transaction, though: a nice conversation with a former vinyl fan who'll be happy to see his TT going to an appreciative youngster. Let him sense your enthusiasm, and reassure him that you'll be responsible for taking good care of his TT. He'll probably feel better that way(good Karma for you! :D), if he's having any second thoughts about letting go of his old gear. While you're there, you might ask him if he still has any of his old records or other gear that he'd like to get rid of at the same time. A lot of great deals have been made that way (by asking that 'extra' question). You never know, he might say something like, "No, just Grandpa's old tube Marantz stuff in the attic...but who'd want that really old stuff these days?"

I already have an Ortofon OM 5E and plan on upgrading to the Denon DL 160.

Not a complete noob here.
Ssorry about that. Earlier when you said you didn't know how to check wear, or what pivot points were, I was thinking this was relatively new for you.

The Denon 160 is a great cart.

Good to see a younger generation taking record playback so seriously. With the SL-1200 and the Denon cart, you'll have a setup many of us would be pleased to own.

LOL you did at first, but you redeemed yourself. :)

I think when you get the TT you can clean it up and you won't care about any of the marks when you hear what it sounds like dialed in.

A lot of folks use cork. There are some Sorbothane mats out there. Never like felt myself.

Well...I guess I am somewhat a noob if I didn't know what the pivot points were. Haha, I do know a lot though.

You know enough to grab a nice table like a 1200 and a fine cart like a 160.

So plenty of bonus points there.

Be sure to share pics when you get it home and cleaned up!

Just got it home! Really cool deck. I still have to clean it up. I checked to make sure if everything works ok. Everything was fine except I have a question for whoever can answer it. The lever at the base of the tone arm with the weights/skate is the cueing switch. When i pop it up, the tone arm pops up as it should. But when i gently pull the tonearm over the record, it makes its way right back to the starting position. Why is it not wanting to stay hovering above the record?

I know you said you are not a noob, so don't be offended at these questions, but did you level the table and set the anti skate/tracking force?

Haha, not yet. I want to clean it before that. Would that be the problem? My previous Technics was much simpler.

You got a pretty good deal. Fun to clean it up! Do check the spindle/bearing...no visible slop if you wiggle it. If it wasn't used for DJ it's prob ok. If it was just bolt in another.

As markshan said, the tone arm thing is just anti skate. It's good it's doing that...means it's working.

You need to ZERO balance the arm. Which means it will float freely and look level when viewing it from the side.
Once that is done hold the counter weight so it doesn't move and then move the BLACK dial till it reads ZERO. Then turn the entire counter weight till you get your track force set for what ever cartridge your going to use.
Enjoy it.

How do I get this platter off? I don't want to pull on it so hard that I break it.

Edit: Nvm, got it.
