Buy Technics SL-1200 MK2 for $150?

Nice pickup for a buck fifty, well done. I think you are really going to enjoy that one, and from all of the reviews even more when you get the 160. :thmbsp:

There is only 1 problem with it. The VTA WILL NOT move. No matter how hard I force it, it wont move. It's suppose to right? My last turntable didn't have one.

Congrats on the 1200!! Coming from a proud 1200 owner as well. That table will last you a lifetime!

Does the VTA have a lock switch? I know my MK5 does, with that locked there is zero chance of me moving the VTA.

It's frozen on the one I am repairing as well. Try wiggling the lock lever a few times. (this didn't work for me).

I'll be disassembling the arm. When I figure out how to fix it, I'll tell you.

Thanks.

Does anyone else know what the problem could be?

Found this thread at audioasylum:

The recommendation is to put some muscle into it to get it turning but that seems a bit scary to me. If I were you, I'd take the bottom off and look around. Maybe it is locked and the lock/unlock lever isn't actually doing anything. Maybe it's just old and needs some more grease/lube. Maybe it does just need some more muscle.

If it wasn't clean, dirt or sticky liquid could be actinc as either a bonding agent like locktite or crud in the threads preventing it from rotating.

I had the same problem on an SL-1700 MKII. I took the thing apart removed the tonearm and sprayed some penetrating oil and let it set. I then very carefully so as not to scratch used a pair of channel lock pliers with a piece of leather around the collar and holding on to the base and brute force. After it finally broke free I cleaned and relubed the threads. It seems to be a common problem on the older ones.

Those rings are pretty tough, just don't want to scratch it or hold on to the top tonearm assembly.

If the platter is giving you trouble put a TINY and I mean TINY amount of WD 40 around the spindle and let it sit for awhile. The platter should then come off easily.

Well awesome. The tone arm wont auto-return either. How can that be fixed?

Sell it and buy a semi auto Turntable like an SL-1700 MKII. :D Sorry Bud but the 1200 does not have auto return as it is a fully manual TT.

Edit

Looks like Skylounger beat me by a couple of seconds.
