C36 Viscount LE14A eWaves

Wow - nice job. Remind me of my LE14A Bozak Urban EWaves, but I like those Viscount cabs better. If you ever get the itch to upgrade, try some DE250s on the WG, it's a little smoother to my ears.
 
Thanks! These are a house-warming gift for a buddy, so as they are now, so they're probably always to remain. Maybe the next pair, though: I'm going to be looking out for some more old cabinets in need of love and friends in need of good sound.

Thanks! Yes, I needed some outlet for my eWave urges, so this is it. If I didn't like my 250Tis so much, I'd probably build some eWaves for myself. Eventually, I'm sure I will.

Reviving this thread for a few questions:

Thinking of making another pair of these with a custom, larger cabinet but the same model woofers, so now I wonder:

(1) What is the approximate sensitivity of these? (2) How much power do you think they can handle; and (3) If I used the B&C drivers, would the crossover design be the same? (See page 1 of this thread.)

Also (bonus question): If I used the larger waveguide seen on the Four Pi speaker, would the same crossover work?

Hi Zonker,

1) 92 db/w

2) Power handling will go down with greater cabinet volume and/or lower tuning frequency. The C36 is about 3 cu. ft., and you're going to get most everything the LE14A is capable of tuning that to about 29 Hz. According to BassBox, moving up to 4.5 cu. ft. while leaving the tuning frequency the same (don't go below the driver's 28 Hz fs) will give you a modest bass gains below 40 Hz without a substantial hit to power handling. The downside is that the group delay peak is sharper and at a slightly higher, more audible frequency. I believe group delay is frequently the secret ingredient for loose, sloppy-sounding bass. I really wouldn't be inclined to use cabinets any bigger than the ones you've already used (though I know it's been done plenty).

First time on this thread, nice build! I bet your friend is enjoying these tremendously.

If you want to use the B&C DE250, how about on the QSC waveguide? It's pretty inexpensive, sounds quite good and the crossover is already figured out for this very combo. This assuming you have the few extra vertical inches to spare on your new cabinet.

Ah, good stuff; thanks. Gives me some ideas to chew on. I'll look at those QSC waveguides and think about a narrower, taller cabinet. Is it OK if the baffle is narrower? Maybe 15 3/4" or so?

It's also funny because I bought those old empty cabinets on a total whim; I had no idea the volume would be correct for those woofers.

My buddy does indeed enjoy the speakers; he says they're the "best [he's] ever heard." :D But they are a bit awkward in his tiny SF dining/living room with built-in bookcases crowding them on the back and sides. Oh, well; he still really digs them.
 
Narrower baffle is OK, it will affect the frequency at which BSC has to be implemented, which is a matter of the crossover's low-pass section anyway. You're looking at ~285Hz with this cabinet width.

I really do dig my QSC waveguides, though I use them with BMS 4550. Guess I can't really call my speaker E-waves because they deviate in more than one way from the posted recipes, but it's the same game. I'm about to embark on another constant-directivity build when weather gets warmer, I have all my parts on hand. :)
