It means that centered around 285Hz, the woofer's radiation will pass from ~full-space at lower frequencies to ~half-space at higher frequencies, wich means up to 6dB more output above this point. An early low-Q rolloff on the Xover or a straight-up LC circuit can do the job to pad-down the higher output above this point.

Very wide cabinets located close to room boundaries may entirely forgo BSC. My 22" wide enclosures in a small room don't truly need it, but I still ended-up with a 2dB pad-down above 200Hz, via miniDSP.

OK, I just read up on baffle step and I think I grasp at least the basics of it.

I note that the crossover that I used for these speakers (see my first few posts in this thread) does not appear to have a BSC circuit on the LF. However, the speakers seem to have abundant bass. How does the crossover design that I used address the issue of baffle step, or was that even necessary? Just curious now. Thanks.

I'm guessing that the somewhat early (900Hz) roll-off at Q=0.7, coupled with the relatively large baffle must minimize the need for any other obvious corrective action. Maybe the LE14 starts to roll-off naturally at some point before 1kHz too, though I'm not familiar with this driver. Such speakers can only require correct room placement to sound balanced. Baffle-step becomes more of an issue the thinner your baffle gets.

And the verdict???

OK, just fired these up and am quite pleased. The pictures should be pretty self-explanatory.

I bought empty cabinets on Craigslist; looks like someone re-veneered them at some point. They still had the slots in the bottoms for grills, so I filled them with MDF inserts and veneered the slots (see the photo further below, with the drivers face-down on the baffles). The new grills are kits from Parts Express and the cloth came from JoAnne Fabrics.

I have the LE14A/B&C combo and was originally going to use the QSC waveguides. Bought them then realized how huge they were (much bigger than the normal guides). Returned them and ended up buying a set of Wayne Parham's H290C waveguides. skywave-rider was nice enough to pair the B&C's with both the QSC and the H290C's, using my crossovers, and made some measurements (see the ewave thread). The results are nearly the same. Right or wrong, as a starting point, I'm using the bottom-end from jackgiff's LE14A along with the top-end from the Deluxe ewave build. I FINALLY have my baffles cut, am waiting for paint to dry/cure and will be able to put these together and fire them up in a few weeks, if all goes well. I'm stuffing them all into some repurposed Barzilay cabs. I don't have any of the fancy measuring mics and such but would be willing to take measurements and post results if anyone wanted to loan out any equipment.

Thanks; they really sound fantastic (I mentioned that somewhere in this thread :D). I had them in my house for a few days before giving them to my buddy, and I played them against my JBL L250s, which have all the 250Ti upgrades. Those speakers have a later generation of the same 14" woofer.

The bass was more prominent than the 250s, but very tight and well-controlled. The midrange and clarity were excellent, and the eViscounts completely filled my large living room with sound; big sound stage. I honestly had difficulty saying which pair of speakers I preferred, as between the two. I believe that I would be perfectly happy with the eViscounts.

And my buddy loves them. He's driving them with a smaller SS Mac amp (100 WPC I think) and they fill his living room very well. One night he had a party and he says they completely rocked the house, too. They were dancing for hours.
