calling Line drive/passive pre users??

I use one on and off. When it matches well with the amp, it's wonderful, when it doesn't, it sucks the life out of the music.

Like everything in this hobby, synergy is key.
:dunno: guess I have just been lucky because mine has sounded great with everything I have used it with:yes: no life sucking here:no:

Redboy,
It's nice to hear what other people have to say about a scarce component. :D

Kind of mirrors my sentiments with the whole passive pre usage; us users seem to be few and quite far between

happy listening,

Amen to the synergy comment.Though I did notice on a thread at the Speaker forum a few subtle sneers at the concept.

From the 'The Speaker IS The Most Important Component' brigade.:smoke:

Oh well, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it think.

I might have to try one of these. Is there a kit you can get somewhere or do you have to do it by rote? Or step up and buy a Prometheus or a new McCormack?

check out goldpoint.
he can custom make ANY configuration of ins/outs.
I was going to buy a goldpoint sa4 until I found my mod squad

super nice guy who hand builds each to customer spec can match all resistors of stepped attenuators or install your resistors into his attenuator.
Pretty cool!

No problem, I might still buy a goldpoint sa4 just for the flexibility, the inputs/outputs are user reconfigurable (look at back of image i posted above) and it seems they may be available as a kit as well definitely worth checking out.

Great stuff!

I'm not sure if you all have heard of Emmanuel Go? Prior to being famous for his First Sound line stages he was famous for his passive systems (back in the 80s).

I've had several conversations with Emmanuel (I actually had lunch with him the other day) and his line stages are totally based on his sound expectations from a passive system. In other words, if it did not add sound quality over his passive, it did not happen. It was with this approach he made his first line stage product in 1989. He started making line stages because he could not make his passives sound any better. As with his development of passives, he took baby steps with changes with his line stages.

Talking with him is such an experience because he makes so very few changes to his products and he spends countless hours verifying to his ears that there is an actual improvement. You will hear a long story about something he tried but in the end he did not use it. Usually there is no improvement and and he returns to his previous configuration.

He is also a strong believer in passives and feels very few line stages improve sound over a simple passive if done right. On his products he has absolute control over what seems like very minor details that you would think would not make a difference, but to him they do. I guess this is the art he has learned from making fine passives.

The price you pay for his products has as much to do with what is included in the hardware as it does with what is not included.

What a way to make a living :music:

Hi, Y'all. I have a Mod Squad Line Drive standard model. I'll try to remember to post a picture of it. Does anyone know if a hybrid power amp, i.e. a Jolida 1501P, etc., will mate well with a passive pre? I'm told a straight SS amp won't because of the impedance issue. Thanks. :)

My LD deluxe has functioned flawlessly with many different ss amps.
Class A, Class AB.
Only issue I can forsee is if one was to need a phono stage the gain would be too low from the line drive.
