I picked up a pair of these M80s recently and they are in need of some work.
The dustcaps on both midrange drivers have almost completely dissolved. I'm a little concerned about how much of that material ended up inside the drivers, but they seem to sound ok.
One of the tweeters is putting out almost no sound, despite measuring almost exactly 4 ohms. I had to disconnect the midrange on that side to even discern anything. The problem also follows this tweeter when I move it to the other cabinet/crossover.
I had read elsewhere that these have some ferrofluid components were involved which could go bad with age. Couldn't just be a recap or a loose wire somewhere.
Both woofers are performing well. I was surprised by the size of the magnets on these.
These are some very high-quality cabinets, although I'm not a fan of the styling. Very home theater. I had imagined redoing them with veneers but there's a lot of weird geometry going on especially with the front baffles and grills. Maybe I could just plane the whole front down and come up with some custom grills. Might be a little ambitious. I've done some woodworking, but this would be my first experiment with speaker cabs and veneers. I think I'd feel more comfortable copying the internal geometry and building some custom cabinets from scratch.
Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to track down some suitable replacement tweeters (I suspect that whatever killed the one will sooner or later claim the other) and dust caps? Thanks
edit: I took a closer look at the other tweeter. I think one of these might have been previously replaced judging by the markings on the back. Still no luck tracking down either of these numbers:
