can i use this amp?

i did not try the amplifier before i brought it home. i turned on some switches and pulled a knob or two and nothing happened on the TT. i did not look inside to see if any tubes were glowing. thats all i did. i wanted to get it out of there before the guy changed his mind about me taking it for free.

i know, not the smartest one....

the bulb is 60w and tests fine.

the fuse has continuity.

lost i am..
 
There is a set of 4 wires coming from the PS two (Black? grey? - are these the ones you are shorting?), one white, and one orange. These have a plug on the end? This went to the TT?

One orange goes to a black wire on the PS tranny right?

Is the white one grounded, and connected ot a green wire? (Hard to see in the photo)

Exacxtly where do the power cord wires go? one to the fuse, from the fuse, where?

where does the other power cord wire go?
 
It's been mentioned but just connect a plug to the two black wires on the power transformer, and be done with it!
 
amp is up and running! correct wires are jumped and the amp chassis lit right up! the rectifier lights as well. tested with CD player and it makes noise too!

should i go back for the original speakers? open baffle project?

Yes go for the original speakers. If you find that you cannot use them you could sell them.

Would make a nice open baffle project. From the look of things it has either a 10" or 12" woofer.
 
i will return for the speakers tomorrow. i have to stop by there anyway.

i am guessing even if this thing seems to work fine, i should renew some components on it? i am up for doing some soldering especially since this thing is small and pretty simple.
 
Yes replace all electrolytic capsacitord along with paper capacitor. Ceramic disc capacitor should be replaced as well given they do affect the sound.

Concerning the resistors if you choose not to replace all resistors you can do the out of tolerance ones.

i think the audio gods would have denied me the use of it for being such a nooB. but i have defied them!! :yes:

so now i need to decide what to do with it.

1. 3 channel open baffle system using the original speakers.
2. Headphone amplifier
3. Amplifier for small bookshelf speakers
4. 2 & 3

i like the idea of being able to use bookshelf speakers with this thing because the open baffle project (while being really cool) will take up precious real estate in my apartment.

i hooked up a 4" midrange to the one of the HF channels. At low volume it sounds fine but breaks up as it gets louder. i am guessing the original speakers will not distort like this. unless it is a problem with the amp.

What modifications will i have to do to make this thing power a set of efficient bookshelves, or headphones?
 
If you have yet to replace the capacitors then that is why it breaks up as you go louder. To confirm it is the amp and not the speaker sub in another full range speaker and see what you get. If you do get the speakers and you don't want them shoot me a PM.

You could always put an 8 ohm resistor across the speaker terminals for the bass channel then use a series-parallel resistor network to reduce the signal enough to run a small powered sub with a built in adjustible low pass crossover. That would most likely be the easiest way as otherwise you have to remove the bass channel transformer then upgrade the main audio transformers to have better low frequency response.

Make sure you have a load (Speaker) on all three channels as tube amps do not like running without a load.

This makes using it as a headphone amp fairly impractical without some mods.
