THE BAD!!

The unit does not power on and no tubes light up. The phonograph did not spin either. Power supply issue? I took it anyway. Free.

I started tracing the voltage from the outlet and got no farther than the fuse. although it looks ok.

There must have been a power switch on the turntable? The switched pot on the amp chassis looks to be wired to switch in or out a loudness function or such, not power. Is it push or pull on? Anyway, the 4 pin female connector on the transformer and rectifier chassis may have the powerline switch connections to lead to a switch on the turntable, and another wire to feed the motor. If this connector wasn't connected, the entire unit would play dead.

I'd pull the rectifier tube until I can get the pilot lights and heaters to glow on the amp chassis. After that, do the dim bulb test with the rectifier plugged in (maybe the filter can cap is shorted?).
 
Go back for the speakers. I have heard that those Motorola speakers can sound good. Looks like it may be a three channel with the larger speaker being on the third channel for bass output.
 
Trace the power wires from the cord to the power tranny. I'll bet one goes to the tranny, one to the plug on top and the mate from the tranny goes to the plug. That is where the switch (from the TT) will be. The other pins will probably be the Phono input to the amp, (did you get a look at the TT? It may have a Phono Pre built in, and uses the power there as well)

Three Trannys on the amp chassis, I'd say yes, a three channel Motorolla, which they were known for in the early stereo days. The one on top should be the center bass, and the other two should be R/L stereo.

Date code is 1960. as you guessed.

At a minimum get the bass speaker. It will likely be a 10" Golden Voice at a guess, since This is such a small amp. I'd be surprised if it were larger. I have a 15" in a DIY infinite baffle, and the bass it puts out is incredible.
 
Hmm, just noticed the grey plug goes from the amp to the PS. Is the Vol switch also a push pull? That might be the power switch also, or there might be a pair of wires going from the TT to either unit to turn it on or off.

I saw the woofer, could not tell what size it is but pretty sure its not a 15. 12 or 10?
 
Dave, the two black wires on the big black power transformer are the power wires. The on/off switch was on the turntable itself.

the balence control is the only push/pull switch.

the woofer looked like it was smaller than 10" but could have been, and it was a golden voice. the other two drivers looked close to 5". i cannot take the console because it is being used as furniture. plus it is really beat up on the outside. i guess i could build open air speakers with the drivers.... cause the back of the console had holes in it anyway...

Ha, nice grab, for free. :D Those Great Britain tubes are Mullards, some of the best you can get. :thmbsp: I hope they're still strong, might easily be, since the amp was in a record player. Some of my best sounding 6V6 tubes are GE coin-based, from a record player, & they test nice & strong. :yes:
 
thank you for all the help! i will be making the tester after work. i still dont know which pins on the connector need to be joined to complete the circuit to the amp chassis. i need some help. should i post a more detailed picture?

Look at the brown wires coming from the plug. One goes to the fuse, and the other goes to the connector. Now look at the two black wires coming from the power transformer. One black wire is connected to the other side of the fuse, and the other black wire is connected to the connector. So.........on the connector, jump the brown wire to the black wire on the connector.

When in doubt, like I said earlier, just connect the plug to the two black wires coming out of the power transformer. Of course, keep the fuse inline.

ok, so after jumping the black and grey wires with the rectifier removed, i have not lights on any tubes... :no:

this connected the black wires on the tranny with the fuse inline.

what am i doing wrong?
 
Are you powering it via the dim bulb tester?

There is a set of 4 wires coming from the PS two (Black? grey? - are these the ones you are shorting?), one white, and one orange. These have a plug on the end? This went to the TT?

One orange goes to a black wire on the PS tranny right?

Is the white one grounded, and connected ot a green wire? (Hard to see in the photo)

Exacxtly where do the power cord wires go? one to the fuse, from the fuse, where?

where does the other power cord wire go?
 
i used the dim bulb tester, built as described. i got no light on the bulb and no lights on the tubes. the rectifier was removed also.

i used an extension cord and did not break the neutral (white) the bulb is on the black wire.

:(

i checked the fuse for continuity an it was good. it is slow blow.

Can I assume you tested the light bulb? What wattage?
 
OK, connect a plug directly to the two black wires coming off of the power transformer. The two black wires are the 117/120 volt in. BTW were you able to power up the amp before you bought it?
