Can someone explain advent bullnose?

Oh, and the Advent /1 came two versions. The early version had the baffle inset from the front of the cab, with the grill (with square corners) fitting flush on top of it. The later one had the baffle flush with the cab front, and the grill (with rounded corners) suspended over it on 'pegs.' Both were vinyl, not veneer.

Also, even though the original Advent Loudspeaker's front has been called "bullnose', it's a mistake and should be discouraged. Its front is "beveled'.

I seem to remember thinking the NLA sounded much better than the OLAs in general. They were re-voiced by Andy who went on to found Boston Acoustics. I remember them seeming to have deeper bass, and a little bit brighter and more clear mids/highs.

Truth. I have a pair of beveled OLAs with green fried eggs and a steel basket woofer. Do you think someone swapped the original Masonite woofs for steel, or did Advent make some OLAs with steel basket woofs?

“June 7 1973” on the tweeter. Serial #A 74525. I apologize for the delayed reply, Doug—thank you. It’s definitely a Walnut OLA and definitely a metal basket. Someone did a hack refoam, and it buzzes and rubs. I rotated the woofer and the rub is gone, but the buzz is worse. Anyway, I want to be sure I know what I have before I attempt to re-refoam it.

I would say the tweeters are actually those made for the Smaller Advents with dates from 1973. If you can get one out, measure the magnet. If it is 2.5" square, it is a Smaller Advent tweeter. If it is 3" square, it is a full size Advent tweeter but that date doesn't coincide with when Advent actually was making full size Advent tweeters with green cones. That was in 1975.

The woofers are probably replacements unless the cabinets are from very late in production and even then, it's never been definitively established that Advent used all-metal woofers in any of the original Advent Loudspeakers. They may have. The thing to do would be to remove the woofers and see if there is any remaining residue from Mortite around the woofer opening. If so, they would have originally had Masonite woofers. Even that isn't totally definitive, however, because we never know, Advent could have used Mortite with some of the all-metal woofers before they used the thin foam gaskets.

EDIT: Oops, looking at the photo again, I see a sealer like Mortite was used later so I guess that idea won't work to determine if the woofers are replacements or not..

Thanks, Doug. I’m color-blind, and my g/f assures me that these are actually orange (terra cotta) fried egg tweets and not green. My apologies, but I’m thinking then that those are the correct tweeters.

There is some sealer evident behind the woofer. I’m not sure if it’s Mortite, but it looks like hazy silicone. I’ve attached a pic. The cabs are stuffed with fiberglass, loosely covered in cheesecloth.

I’ve also attached a closeup of the questionable work—no wonder it buzzes! I’m tempted to try to work some glue into the gaps around the cone, but my gut tells me to remove the surround (which appears to be a trimmed, Simply Speakers product) and start again with a pair from Rick Cobb.

Have a set of 5002 in the garage playing currently. Replaced a set of ns690s that just moved indoors. No comparison. Ns690s destroy the 5002, but the 5002 still sound great to me. 3 way vs 2 way. Advents are bass heavy.
