Hi,

I bought a pair of Canton Quinto 540. I did a quick test when the boxe arrived, just to be sure they work.

I am a bit disappointed that the upside of the boxes doesn't look as good as the rest.

Here are a few photos:

The sound is good, especially the bass. I hope the high/mid tone will be better after recapping.

I am reading the Quinto threads on this forum, in particular the ones from @Bratwurst7s.

5 to 6 hours of careful hand sanding per cabinet and 2 coats of Osmo Hartwachs-Öl (original 3032 Farblos Seidenmatt) and they will look like new. (Osmo Hardwax Oil, Colorless Semi-gloss for English speakers :) )

The 1317, 1319 and 2525 caps are MKT film and do not need to be changed.
The 3098 elco is 18µf.
The 1182 and 1183 I'm still looking.
Just as important as new caps is re-flowing all of the solder connections.

I just wrote Canton customer service and asked if they can give is pdf's of the schematic. I'll post as soon as I have any more info.

Notice the woofer seal in the area that I've marked...

...I've seen this on several Quintos now. It's doubtful of the woofer was ever completely sealed here because the seal was installed at the factory misaligned, you can see that from the imprint left from the woofer frame. I use double-stick tape to hold the seal in position when installing the woofer to get it correctly positioned for full contact all the way around.

One of my friends 530's was actually burping and farting through the open part of the seal when he turned the volume up until we got the seal correctly positioned. :eek:

These are Canton Karat 200's that I hand and sanding block sanded and used Watco Natural Danish Oil. There was a long mark on top that I removed all but shadow. By applying warm iron placed over very damp cotton rag for a couple seconds. Repeated if needed. I was skeptical, but works well.
I made a rookie mistake of letting paper used to cover drivers for sanding, stick to tweeter. Ouch. Recommend making a cardboard cover with driver clearance.
edit: better to remove drivers.
Should look nice with refinishing. Good luck.

I read on this forum that some people have good result with varnish remover. This approach sounds rather tempting to me; it's probably easier than sanding?

I thought one would remove the drivers out of the cabinet before sanding?

I read in one of your thread that you added internal bracing. Do you recommend doing it for the Quinto 540?

In hindsight removing drivers is good idea. Might have to replace gaskets.
From my reading here, there's every kind of opinion on best refinishing methods. And use of liquid removers. Start a thread, Best way to refinish .....? See varied ideas.
There are some members who do amazing restorations from pics, including GD70. There are many speaker restoration threads showing thier progress.

Good advice. :thumbsup: Just because I like to punish myself with hand sanding doesn't mean that it is the best way to go for everybody. :)

I would, and always do, remove the drivers before doing any cabinet re-finishing.

As far as the cabinet bracing, considering the width of the front panel and 12" woofer, imho a 16mm to 18mm round brace would be a good idea for the 540.

I also did hand sanding. My first restoration. Not because it was easier. Just thought less likely for bad things to happen vs power sander or chemicals. I may have been close to going through veneer on one top, to rid of scratch.
 
I am afraid that I could do some damage to the veneer with hand sanding, that's why I am considering liquid remover.
 
I'm a novis at refinishing. I posted pics to show example what a novis can do on similar speakers. I did a thread on my reno, but you would get better info from more experienced.
Theres a lot of resources on AK. Weed through it before starting and ask plenty of questions. Search speaker restorations and other key words. You'll do fine. Good luck.

I followed the notion of using the basic, petroleum-based, paint thinner to wipe down the cabs using a ton of paper coffee filters. Any nastier spots were lightly "sanded" using 3M scotchbrite sanding pads, then wiped again. I didn't have any "microcrystalline wax" on hand, so I used old-skool liquid kitchen wax applied and polished off with paper coffee filters. Left a nice shine without looking unusual.

1183: Wego Elko glatt 35 VAC 7N ALR/U bipolar GPF (3,5 cm × 1,6 cm) 15 ųF
3098: Wego Elko glatt 25 VAC 9N ALR/UTFZ/TM (3,5 cm × 1,4 cm) 18 ųF

Hey Tony,

I've been buying speaker parts mainly from Iris Strassacker and HiFi Collective. They've been completely reliable and are good about responding to email. Reasonable prices and both have been pretty quick to ship. HiFi C isn't as slow as most other places in the UK because they've been shipping to me with air post even tho I've been paying for slow and cheap.
