Comic Book Hero Captain America Dies
Mar 7, 1:11 PM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Captain America has undertaken his last mission — at least for now. The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the Daily News reported.

On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse, according to the newspaper.

It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-wearing character, created in 1941 to incarnate patriotic feeling during World War II. Over the years, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in a total of 75 countries.

But resurrections are not unknown in the world of comics, and Marvel Entertainment editor in chief Joe Quesada said a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible.

Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.

According to the comic, the superhero was spawned when a scrawny arts student named Steve Rogers, ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to serve his country, agreed to a "Super Soldier Serum" injection. The substance made him a paragon of physical perfection, armed only with his shield, his strength, his smarts and a command of martial arts.

In the comic-book universe, death is not always final. But even if Captain America turns out to have met his end in print, he may not disappear entirely: Marvel has said it is developing a Captain America movie.

Well, at least temporarily there will be no more of:

"...when Captain America throws his mighty shield!..."

I heard this report on the radio this morning.

How the F can they kill Captain America?!

Sounds like more corporate marketing greed...

Well at least Wonder Woman is making a come back.

Captain America was the suckiest of all superheros. He did not have any great powers. just a shield.

maybe he will come back as a badd ass gi-joe type superhero with rocket launchers, smart weapons and body armor.

imho. ymmv.

Sorry, NONE of the Marvel Super Heroes sucked; they were basically everyday Joe superheros

The pansies were the guys over in the DC world. Just a bunch of goodie goodies with no personality at all.

I'll take Peter Parker or Ben Grimm over Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne any day

Can you imagine what the Hulk or Silver surfer would have been like with CD ?

Super powers do not define a super hero. It's the good within. Besides Captain America kicked ass for over 65 years.

Well, don't get too exercised about it.Don't forget that they did the same thing with Superman and he is doing fine.May be a ploy to boost sales so his demise is probably a hoax.

Yes indeed. I never followed the comic, but always liked the idea of the character.

Well at least Wonder Woman is making a come back.

E-gads, I hate Wonder Woman... She's the lamest of all superpeople in my book. Invisible airplane? Bullet-deflecting bracelets? Big hair? Spin around real fast to change into the (goofy) outfit? For pete's sake...

Too many instances of flipping through channels as a kid to glimpse Linda Carter looking awkward and embarrassingly unattractive...

What are you bashing Wonder Woman!?! :D

I'd have to agree...seeing a usually hot Linda Carter in the dorky suit was sad. :sigh:

Sounds like a few Revere and Saugus girls I once knew from the North Shore...

'cept the planes weren't invisible, and were flying over East Boston, outta Logan...

Were you hangin' out on the wall at Reveah Beech, wit Vinny and Tommy? And you all had wikked pissa Trans Ams That you polished up for hours before you would hang out at Rveah Beech?

Wikkid pissa popah dood! IROCs all the way, with Craygahhs and a kickin' subwoofah, dude! In my Oakley blades and shimmerin' jacket, dood!

I don't know that I'd call Bruce Wayne a goodie goodie, Batman can be a pretty dark guy.

Cap must get killed in the big Civil War storyline Marvel has going on now. All people with super powers must register with the government or they are branded outlaws. Iron Man leads the heroes who are obeying the law and Cap was leading the heroes who opposed the law and thought it unconstitutional.

Thirded. Motion passes.
Make mine Marvel. I predict that the Mighty Marvel Bullpen has $omething up their collective $leeve for a return at a later date. I mean, c'mon, Jean Grey's come back from the dead more than once. Why can't Cap?
Tom

FOURTHED. Never gave a whit for DC.
MARVEL is "where it has always been at." Wow, that doesn't work well in the erfect or pluperfect or whatever it is.
Batman's dual personality is almost interesting.
The heroes are better by a long shot in Marvel.
And the villains in DC are PATHETIC. Lex Luther???
Jeez, I hate to hurt anyone's feelings, but that's ME.
A bald white guy with no particular talents. hell, I'm actually more malevolent. The villains opposed to Spiderman alone are more
evil, powerful and interesting than the whole contingent of DC bad guys.
The Superman at the beginning movie proved it, compared to the Batman at the beginning movie.
