They have no clue how any of this works do they, just if they hook the wires up it goes BOOM BOOM.

Haha....there is another side to car audio though.

I used to "compete" in the prof class of IASCA, one of the main sanctioning orgs in car audio.

I focused on sound quality and used balanced high voltage cables, horns, dual 1/3 octave channel EQ's, and every speaker had it's own channel. It sounded fantastic, very clean and loud. And you never knew all this stuff was installed in my car.

Morons with a passion, yes.....but there are the audiophiles with the 400lb turntables, water insulated speaker wires, and marble platforms too....all for the love of music. :)

I have no problem with people who actually understand what they are doing and can make a system that sounds good. What drives me nuts are the kids who throw a giant sub in their trunk and call it a day. Where the bass just seems to overpower the midrange and higher frequencies.

In every hobby or pursuit there are the cutting-edge extremists who, sometimes, lose sight of the original goal.
 
I guess I've never heard a good high powered car stereo. But whenever I can hear them coming for a couple of blocks, and they make the soffitts on my house vibrate, I tend to think of them as noise pollution.

You should sometime. If done properly they can sound incredible. I've had a few systems over the years and I always focused on sound quality. Even though my system wasn't as high-end as many I thought it sounded better than most. My favorite system was back in the late 90's/early 00's and used an Eclipse 5303 deck, Pioneer DEQ 9200 (EQ, crossover, time-alignment), Rockford Fosgate 240.4 and 200.2 amps, A/D/S AL-6 components and Diamond Audio 12" subs in a sealed enclosure. It was tri-amped with 2 channels of the 240.4 driving the tweeters and the other 2 channels driving the mids. The 200.2 was bridged and powering the 2 subs. The DEQ 9200 was what made it all come together because it allowed you to tweak the delay so that it sounded like you were sitting equidistant from all the speakers. Since it also had a nice graphic and parametric equalizer and flexible crossover it really allowed me to fine tune it. It was as much fun to listen to as my Parasound/B&W home system.

You guys really owe it to yourselves to sit in a sound quality car at some point. It can be VERY eye opening.

no, those are just the dumb ****s who happen to get most of the attention, just because there happen to be more dumb ****s than smart people who enjoy music.
 
.....I had a friend who used two 12 inch subs in sealed boxes in his hardtop corvette....he had them in the cabin behind the seats toed to kicking between the seats....he could honestly knock potato chips out of a bag....that was 15 years ago....I see him now and he says "huh" a lot....true story.....
 
Gets me how most of the kids today, when it comes to cars, only want to talk watts, amps, and subwoofers. When I was young, conversations about cars usually leaned more towards horsepower, gear ratios and cam duration! But then again an 8 track mounted under the dash was pretty cool too. (Showing my age here?)
At a family gathering I was showing off my newly restored '82 Silverado 4x4 to a cousin when one of the youngsters there asked what kind of stereo setup it had. I told him it had an AC Delco AM/Fm cassette and I didn't even lock the doors. If someone really wants an AC Delco, please don't break the windows to get it!

My wife got sick of the kids pulling up beside her at a stoplight and her not being able to hear her own stereo. So I "took it up a notch". She had a full size Chevy 4x4 extended cab. She ended up with a setup with a decent head, a smallish amp for Alpine fronts, and a 100W pushing a single 10" sub. It was nothing compared to the moster systems out there but the 10 was a custom build (I was working in the Eminence lab at the time) and in the right box. She could then hear her music at stoplights. And if she got aggressive on the volume knob it would play respectably loud. She got a lot of funny looks with Garth Brooks or Randy Travis audible for a block. It sounded pretty good with minimal expense, just a little care in the design and implementation.

The Orlando police have busted two wanted felons in the last week or so because they were stopped for having "thumping" cars. What a great new tool for the police to use; stopping you because of the noise limit law.
