Car Audio Morons

My current car is the first one that i have not performed at least some modifications to the stock audio system. I listen to more audio in the car then I could ever hope at home, so in reality, I should be spending more money there. I have had McIntosh, Adcom, PPI, a/d/s/, Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, MB Quart, Scanspeak, and other gear in my car over the years. There aren't many home systems I've heard that better some of the nicer systems i've had and heard in cars.

I don't get SPL contests, but then again, I don't really understand drag racing for the most part. There is a lot of science that goes into the competition SPL cars/vans.

I had a friend like that ,he bought a Formula Firebird then spent more on the stereo than he did for the car. It got very loud 135db (subwoofer only) at a contest but my modest system 10 speakers 5 amps (all class a) 400 watts total sounded better, even he agreed.

Many true SPL systems are built to get loud at a specific frequency.

I had a pair of subs that would do 147db very consistently. However, it was designed to have a huge frequency spike at around 50hz. It was a god awful sounding system to listen to. It was setup for competition, and that was it.

There are two worlds to car audio: SPL and SQ.

Some of us go for SQL which makes us weirdo's lol.

Much of what you hear: The kids with their trunk rattling for blocks is equvalent of buying BPC from BB. Then there are those of us who "bump" Hamon Kardon, Adcom, etc. I'm a total freak cause I demanded burr-brown dacs in my head unit cause I really can hear the difference. lol.

Trust me there is some good stuff in car audio. MB Quart has always been one of my favs. Along with PPI and old JL audio.

I had a system that had the snobs from the audio boutique I used to frenquent raise their eyebrows....even the guy went to get the owner to listen to my system..he said it was the first time he actually felt that kind of soundstaging-imaging in a car...as well as perfect integration between subwoofer and midbass...7" scan speak will do that when you have also a Lambda Acoustics 10" in a sealed box..tubed xover, McIntosh amps, Alpine HU with outboard DAC processor via fiberoptic cable...plus the main thing: Time correction with a microphone.

Scan Speak 2904/6000-01 tweeter,,,excellent all around and crossed over at 2200 Hz.

I'm definitely a SQ freak, I thought I'd share my current setup in my 350z. I don't compete anymore, just like good music in the car.

6 1/2's in the kickpanels, and a single 12 in the hatch. Kickpanel mounting makes all the difference.

...close your eyes and the band is sitting on my dashboard.

i used to be a car audio moron, and still am sometimes, 141.9 at 26 hz is totally fun to watch peoples reactions..most people get that number, but at double the hz around fifty..and i did it with one fifteen and 3k rms.

Right now i'm building a 97 jetta for sql, vifa tweeters, unknown 6.5 mids so far, maybe lotis, and two old atomic quantum 12s ported, i like the sound of properly built ported ofer sealed..but thats just me and the customers sql requirements.

TThe amps are ppi art, the black ones, an a1200 on subs, and an ax606 on mids/highs four channels bridged to two for the midbasses and the last two channels on tweters.

Should be pretty fun and loud as well as great to listen to.

Last customer i did consulting work for put six kicker l7 fifteens, the square ones, in his 78 caprise where the back seat used to be, needless to say, its stupid loud and sounds horendous but he's happy.

My truck cab is smaller then a car interior, so the stock speakers actually sound pretty decent.

I'm going to replace them though, because the surrounds are going...

Why can't they send me one of those subwoofers instead of blowing them up. My car really needs one. Although I wouldn't run it that loud. I've got factory tweeters and little full range drivers but any bass is berrily audible.

In the first video it looked like they plugged it into and electrical outlet.
