Cartridge and Stylus for Dual 1019

I found this discussion researching the 1019 because I'm specifically looking fot the best possible turntable with a 16 rpm speed option and a guy in my town is selling this one. So, reading some bad coments here I felt obligated to ask some questions: About the cartridge, the guy is selling it with a Shure 55 for $385 (USD) Is it extremely expensive? Is it a good match? Can i get something better? The guy seems to be a vintage audio junkie, wich somehow makes him trusworthy. About the speed: This is a ripping project so can expect a precise and stable playback at the lowest speed? Ist it really possible to correct the pitch with this turntable?

But, to try to answer your questions:

Yes that's on the expensive side. It's a good turntable especially if serviced, but not that hard to find cheaper (I have 3). It's a good match though with the M55, but you could do better.

Not many turntables will handle the 16 RPM speed in any more stable a fashion than this one, largely because of the weight of the platter providing exceptional inertia. And yes, you can adjust the pitch.

About five years ago I sold a completely restored 1019 for $250 at a charity auction. It did go for more than I had expected but the buyer was happy was and still is happy about his purchase, as is the B&G Club. $385 does seem rather dear but I've not seen it to grade it. Basically I would say that it would be worth that much only if it was in pristine mechanical and cosmetic condition with service records. The Shure M55 is a good choice but it's an old cartridge and not worth much. You can buy a good replacement stylus for about $30 up to nearly $200, depending on the grade and profile of the diamond.

The 1019 has a pitch adjustment that tweaks speed plus or minus about 5%.

Software exists that lets you rip at one speed, say 33 1/3, and lets you adjust pitch up or down to the proper speed in computer and then save that file to whatever medium you need.

On the mechanical side, I can only trust the guy, who, as I said, seems to really love these kind of vintage gear. He also said that he owns a Perpetum Ebner, no idea which model. Anyway, I won't get anything cheaper where I live for sure, but also I don't think anybody will take this out of my hands anytime soon. In the crazy scenario where I go and buy this, can we go back to the original topic? Which would be the very best cartridge for this turntable? And again thanks a lot!

I wonder how it turned out for the OP? He had only posted in this thread, and that was back in 2009.

If this were a current issue I would have asked if he replaced the interconnects before dropping a few hundred dollars on a cartridge. Duals are notorious for needing the interconnects replaced and having oxidation in the cartridge sled connections.

A.) That has the rare "bread box" plinth, which adds to the value.

B.) That a European version with the size selector indicated in centimeters instead of inches. I bet it also has a voltage selector under the platter.

I might stick with Shure on that. You can go all the way to a V15 on it for example. They made specific versions that were integrated with the cartridge holder and those usually ended with "D" or "DU" as in M75D or V15DU. Those can sometimes be found cheaper than buying a sled and cartridge separately.

I have one of the metric marked 1019s and another is in the breadbox. I might move them around to get the same as the one depicted. Ultimately I really only plan to keep one of them.

Like posts above. Don't go crazy with a $1000 cart. My suggestion is keep it simple. I run a lot of Shure M55s. Just got one of the last NOS from the Voice of Music website. Sounds terrific on my recent addition, a Dual 1229! They have a Shure M93 for under $50. I will be purchasing one or more for future projects. The M55 has an elliptical stylus. Another choice are the Shure M44. Same high output with a conical stylus. Have used them on several Dual turntables I fixed up for the local record store. Later, you can get an elliptical stylus for it, as the body is the same as a M55, as an upgrade from JICO. They both beat a M97.. Don't get it.

As suggested above if you have access to a Shure V15 type II, they make a nice upgrade. Have one on my other 1229. Coupled with a JICO HE stylus makes a nice step up. Running a Shure my 1010S, a M55. Not as nice as your 1019, but decent sounding deck. Good luck hope this helps!

As suggested above if you have access to a Shure V15 type II, they make a nice upgrade. Have one on my other 1229. Coupled with a JICO HE stylus makes a nice step up. Running a Shure my 1010S, a M55. Not as nice as your 1019, but decent sounding deck. Good luck hope this helps!

Will second Eric's recommendation of a Jico HE as a good match on Dual's. Very happy with one in a M91, on a 1219. Solid bottom end yet less veiled across the freq spectrum IME.

I hooked up my metric 1019 just an hour ago to spin some 78s. I have a Shure M91ed on it with an original Hi Track stylus but I have an EVG 78 which I just swapped it and bumped up the VTF.

If you ever want to go OEM, the N78S stylus works with the M91ED.
I've never seen a plinth like yours... is that a Noresco?

I like the M97xE or M35X on my "metric" 1019. I also sometimes use an M91ED.

It might be a Noresco plinth but there are no markings. This style or some variation seems relatively common around here for both 10 and 12 series. Recessed into a black painted top, sometimes slotted for a "hinged" (really just flip back) cover and sometimes just sit on style. My breadbox is similar.

I could go the Shure N78 route but for the rare time I'm playing 78s I don't think I'll bother.

OK, audioheads! I've read most of the previous threads and can't find one that talks about the Dual 1019 cartridge and stylus that flips over between 33's and 78's. Not being as knowledgeable as most of you, I was under the impression that you shouldn't use the same needle for both types of records. I just acquired an awesome TT in a handmade walnut case with an old Empire 888 (not TE or PE, just 888), and I don't want to mess it up. Darned thing came with the stacking spindle, too, but needs new rubber. All good. I just bought one completely restored. Now I have a back up. Now I just need the right cartridge set up. Your knowledge and help is appreciated!
