my vintage sony cd player finally died.

i do have a surplus of dvd players in the house ( everything is watched off a computer now ). So, i've been using the audio out from a toshiba dvd player as my cd player .

Is there a difference in sound quality between the two ?
Does a dvd player sample the sound at the same rate as a standard cd player would ?

just wondering....

This question has been asked a number of times, and people do not agree in their answers. Mine is a definite "yes, there are important sound quality differences between a cheap DVD player and a good CDP". As in everything, there are exceptions, but my position is a generic one. Please, have a look into these threads:

At this point in the audio game... a drive is a drive is a drive... anything with a transport will read a disc... it's all about the DAC chipset. You can use anything to play a disc, but use an external DAC to get the quality you want. PLEASE don't be that sucker that believes that a $2K cdp has any better transport than a $50 DVD player... they probably buy them from the same manufacturer...

Another individual saving us poor stupid audiophiles from ourselves. Truth is transports sound different and sometimes remarkably so. I recently used a Cambridge 650C and a Rega Apollo as transports for a Rega DAC and the differences were quite considerable. No speculation and no BS. Been there done that.

thanks guys....you're input is appreciated.

sorry if i opened a can of worms, that was not my intent.

My OPPO93 does not sound as good as my Rotel 1072 CDP

Also, there are as stated several levels of transports and they are not all the same. Although there is a great markup, the $10 drive you throw in a PC is in no way the same as a high end Wadia Transport.

Impressed with my Oppo BDP-95 recent purchase. As nice as the Rega Apollo when it's not having "issues."
