Yamaha has some nice CD Players available and if you look around you can find them in silver. I have a Harman Kardon HD990 CD Player and I love it. I bought it direct from the factory.

I use a Cambridge Audio 640c v2 with my sx-950 system. No complaints. More convenient than records, but the vinyl is the preferred choice for serious listening. Look for a used 640c v2, 650c or pricier 651c.

I'd be looking for ones with a headphone jack with a volume knob. Seems that when they add this feature, they know they have a serious listener on their hands and they build the whole unit better. Yamaha, Marantz, and others have models with these options :)

I find, like the Stereophile review, that the differences in sound quality for CD players are pretty small. SACD does usually sound a step above CDs though.

A few have special features that might be useful but if you're buying used remember that the lasers will someday fail on you. Ergo, players are depreciating assets and replacement lasers may not always be available.

But for a specific recommendation, try a Sony SCD-2000ES. It plays CDs and SACDs and has a headphone amp/connection with a volume control. These can be had for $100 to $200 used. It also has dual power supplies and a nice finish. I generally prefer a single disc player but a carousel player like this has it points and seems to make no sound quality difference.

What is your budget? Do you require silver finish? In that case, I'd go for a used Cambridge Audio 640 C V 2 .

i dearly love my 507esd sony. if you want new, id say whatever matches the decor so that cambridge audio looks nice and people always recommend it.
if used id say vintage sony. winner every time, especially with the tda1541 chip.

or hijack the one from your son and say, "sorry its what your mom wants." he's going to learn soon enough anyways.

I own a Rotel RCD-1070 that's built well and sounds very nice. You can pick them up used in the $100-$200 range. The RCD-1072 is said to be even better, but might run you a bit more.

Any second hand SONY ES series CDPs with wood sideburns.

These look very nice with the sideburns :thmbsp::yes:

Wow, there's a lot of Great suggestions here.

Thanks everyone for the help........now I just have to make a decision :scratch2:

Second hand Marantz KI stuff is said to be good bang for buck.
I like having the headphone socket, not too sure about volume but I'm playing around with that.

Regarding vintage CDPs, please bear in mind that many of that (like most Sony ES CDPs) are fitted with laser pickups that are no longer available.

Some of the expensive DVD players were very good cd players.

Look for a Sony DVP-S7000. Retailed for $1,000 but used today you can pick one up for $100 or less. They even had separate lasers for cd player so they will last a long time.

Yeah' I saw this on FeeBay a little more then I care to spend on a CD/DVD player $2,499.99 plus it's 10yrs old  but I do like the color and the cool remote :thmbsp:

here's the write up from the seller:

Sony flagship DVD player DVP-S7000 Japanese version. This is Sony’s first generation reference DVD player with dual discrete optical pickups (650nm for DVD and 780nm for CD/VCD), separate audio/video power supply, digital noise reduction circuitry, full feed forward digital filter, and pulse current D/A converter. Although it is more than 10 years old and only outputs 480i, it still outperforms most progressive scan players on the market today even its own sibling S7700.

This is the champagne color edition released for the Japanese domestic market. Player is region 2 and can only playback DVD discs of NTSC format (not PAL or SECAM format). The picture quality of this player is still considered one of the best even by today's standards. The color is faithfully natural with well-balanced skin tone. The picture is ultra clear with excellent detail. The rigid chassis and honeycomb transport damper effectively reduce vibrations to provide a stable and precise optical performance. Unlike its successor S7700, the S7000 does not suffer from the infamous chroma upsampling error, aka chroma bug. The chroma bug may not be readily noticeable for some people but once it is discovered or when viewed on a large screen it can be very annoying.
