Most equalizers have a "tape monitor" loop built in to replace the one the equalizer took up on the receiver. This should be a simple option that would work exactly as one would hope.
Once he makes sure the CD responds to the equalizer, I would connect the tape deck to that one. That would be step two.
Remember, he's still got a VCR to contend with, That'll be step three. Get steps 1 and two working first. Then worry about that.
For that matter, about the only thing I can fathom with the VCR is it's audio being fed into the receiver. that's a simple red/white analog input, not unlike a CD player.
