Cerwin Vega D-9 Tweeter Replacement

I am new here...so please forgive me if I in any way miss-step with this post.

Have had my D-9s since new (September 1987) and sadly hadn't used them for several years. Dusted them off a few months ago, replaced the foam and fired them up and instantly fell back in love again. However, one of the CS5 tweeters is dead.

While there are several posts out there around replacing the CS5 tweeters in the D-9s, I am confused.

My preference is to locate one or a pair of used CS5s (mine are NOT made in Taiwan) and as you can imagine, so far no luck. So, I am looking at buying new to carry me until I find a used replacement but I want the new to be a direct fit (no mods to the cut out in the speaker and screws landing into the same holes). Also, must work without any mods to the crossover. I am OK if the sound is a little different as they will just be a stop gap.

That said, looking for advice. The Eminence APT 80 or 200's seem to fit the specs.

Thoughts? Other suggestions?

I would keep an eye out for the lower-end models. Literally EVERY Cerwin-Vega in this model-line uses the exact same tweeter. While the D-9's and to a lesser extent the D-7's are fairly well-known, the lower-end models are not. I have seen a number of D-1's, D-2's, and D-3's with the woofers having dead foam or replaced with car subs and then ultimately sold on Craigslist or the flea market for very cheap.

I understand from other threads that all other models in the D line used C5G tweeters which both sound different and have a lesser power handling capability.

That would conflict with what CV support had told me in the past, but it wouldn't be the first time.
 
The Speaker Exchange sells a replacement compression tweet with the same specs as the original.


Cerwin Vega Style D9, CS5, HF7 Tweeter Replacement Option 055

They are modestly priced and sound better than the original, in my opinion.

Welcome.....D7 owner since 1986...I do keep parts and let me check on the Tweeter.
 
You might want to consider a Sound Dynamics tweeter from North of the Border. Those speakers were well regarded in the Great White North. On FleaBay there is an auction with what would likely be a highly compatible replacement titled:

That was my understanding too, based on my previous search for a single D-9 tweeter. I ended up replacing both with the common substitutes but I think the original ones were better.

What's weird though is I had the same situation. I know both tweeters worked when I put away the speakers. But, when I used them again some years later one of the tweeters didn't work.
 
I also posted a question to CV via Gibson and received the following reply. Curious if anyone knows anything about the tweeter they recommend???

“I had to check with engineering to see if they had any specs or stock. Unfortunately, they do not. Their suggestion is to look for the LSHSA2010 tweeter on the web to see if it is still being carried by someone. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
