Exactly what model Pioneer?I just bought a pair of D7's off Craigslist. They're in perfect shape and sounded wonderful when I demo'd them. My goal is to resurrect my old turntable so I can teach my kids about the beauty of the vinyl LP while shaking the pictures off the walls with some thunderous analog 70's rock.
My turntable's ok but my receiver is a cheap, very old Pioneer. As a result the speakers sound ok at best, but I'm not getting the thump that I'm hoping for. I'm pretty sure it's because my receiver is a piece of crap and not adequate for these speakers.
But on the other hand, the receiver says that it puts out 200 Watts. So before I buy a replacement I'd appreciate some opinions. Do I need more power, or do I just need better quality receiver. I would think 200 Watts would be more than enough power. I guess my question is this: Is a crappy receiver (regardless of power output) always going to sound like crap?
What would sound good? I'd like to keep it old school and go with something vintage.

I need a second set of 8 ohm speaker to make my marantz 140 run at 4 ohm ( 8 ohm x 8 ohm / 8 ohm + 8 ohm = 4 ohm). I don't want to stress my poweramp at 2.66 ohm (if merging 8 ohm set and 4 ohm set).

That is very useful informations !It's also important to understand that impedance isn't a singular value. The figure you often see listed is an average. It varies depending on the frequency, and even for an 8ohm speaker, can actually dip much lower than 8ohms. Many of my 8ohm JBL speakers dip down as low as 5.7ohms. The below chart is an example. This is not the impedance chart of the D-7, but just a typical 8ohm speaker. You can see how much the impedance varies, at times dipping far below 8ohms. Combining two sets of speakers, even two 8ohm sets, can result in some very low impedance dips. I'm not sure about the D-7, DX7, or MX250 but I know from running two sets of 8ohm D-9's at the same time that it can be a very hard load on an amp. It was not difficult to push my 240wpc Yamaha M-2 to it's limits and sometimes beyond.

So, less ohm you have, more the amp will work. Am I correct?
