Well, when you only go "a few times", you'll miss out on what's been there in between.I just keep reading all these stories about finds and incredible thrifts store buys -- the few times I've been in a thrift store, I see stuff like a standalone VHS tape rewinder with leaking batteries for $20

Don't sleep on those old Marantz 63xx turntables. They are good units and with a bit of work/upgraded parts can sound excellent and would give you quite the surprise if put up against some of the "audiophile" turntables from back in the day. And bonus points for matching a vintage receiver, so the price somewhat makes sense given everything else right now.
Look at what $1K will buy with a modern turntable. I'd still rather have a 63xx truth be told, especially if the rest of my equipment is vintage.
Also note that nice 63xx tables have been pricey for quite some time. Not $1K, but nice ones were going for over $400 on ebay 5+ years ago.

I fully intend on getting it running tip top and compare to my other tables. I like my thorens an awful lot tho so it's going to be very hard to top it. I will most likely use the same cartridge on both tables to make it fair. I'm currently running a shire v15 type iii on my thorens, do you think that would be a good fit on the 6300? I also have an ortofon blue I can pull off another table for testing. The 6300 currently has an audio technica 1200sa cartridge but the stylus looks pretty rough so I'll have to get a new one if I'm going to use that cartridge.
I have a few projects I'm going to finish up before tackling these but I did power on the 6300 and it spins! Seems like both speeds work too. I did notice the strobe didnt want to stay lit tho. It lit up for a few seconds initially then got very dim and finally no light all. Hopefully just a bad bulb. We'll see how it goes.
The 63xx is picky about cartridges and some just don't work well, period. You need a medium to low compliance cartridge. Anything with less than 2g tracking probably isn't ideal.

You might figure out which cap/s are in the strobe circuit and change them. I had a Pioneer PL-500 that had no strobe action, and recapped the board. Eureka, the strobe worked. YMMV, but Strobe and speed issues can disappear after a recap.
If it were mine, I'd clean the pots, re-grease it, and at least replace any caps in the strobe part of the circuit (might as well do them all, probably not that many). That may yield a very nice TT.
So I've ordered the parts for the 6300 amd should have it finished in the next week or 2. On the 4270 I went ahead and cleaned it up and hit the pots with some deoxit. When I powered it on I'm only getting sound from the left speaker. Any ideas where to start with trouble shooting? I've never really worked on a receiver this complicated before and to be honest I'm a little intimidated.
