chicks' Goodwill Systems

You found a Mac in a thrift!!!?:jawdrop: I've gotta move back up there. I am positively green with envy.

The Goodwill stores near me save anything that seems like vintage audio for Saturday auctions. Rarely can you get anything worthwhile for less than $40 or $50.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with buying at a thrift store and selling for profit, especially when it's something like vintage audio gear that doesn't fill a need the way clothing does. Goodwill does exist to provide inexpensive items for people with low incomes, sure, but it also exists to give the people who work at Goodwill jobs. Goodwill's mission is completed regardless of who buys their wares. The "profit" you make from reselling a thrift store find is the fee you take for spending the time to locate the equipment and make it available to someone who's looking for it and willing to pay more for it. No one's being taken advantage of at any stage of the process.

If your Dual 1019 is looking for a new home, I have a Dual 1019-shaped spot at my house that I've been looking to fill for a while.

Coming soon: new Rosewood skin for the Yamaha CR-820, to more closely match the big JVC. This is gonna be great! Brought to you courtesy of AK'er Merrylander...

Personally, on looks alone, I'd love to own an AR integrated.

Full disclosure, the AR was bought right here on Barter Town. About the only item I've payed "full price" for, because it's one I lusted after as a teen, and couldn't possibly afford back then. I'm having a cabinet built for it locally.

I guess you're not aware of shopgoodwill.com, where Goodwill tries to maximize profits on the items it gets for free. I don't think too many poor folks are shopping online. The prices that some of the Goodwills around here are starting to charge for untested, often non-functional gear puts it well above what poor folks can afford. Then they are often stuck with a non-working item, because Goodwill won't accept returns.

I love playing with the gear too, but I also put a lot of time into cleaning and fixing it, something Goodwill does not do - I'm surely entitled to charge for my labor ;) Goodwill gets their asking price from me, so I have zero guilt about reselling at a profit after putting my time into an item. After all, I'm hardly rich, this is the only way I can afford nice gear.

Edit: Did I mention that most of my profits go right back to the Goodwill to support my real passion, the music? Hundreds of LPs and CDs in my collection from the GW, so they're doing quite well off my labor. ;) I fully support their mission, which has nothing to do with selling stuff to the poor, it's all about providing jobs to those who might not otherwise be employable: http://www.goodwill.org/about-us/our-mission/

I used to do lot of record buying at Goodwill, but the supply of good condition, desirable titles has dried up along with the stereo offerings. I hardly ever go anymore. CL buys have been my main source of stereo gear, and I still get a lot of records at Record Exchange in STL. No afil...

Swapped locations of the 4X2 Expedit and the right-hand DCM TF-350. This puts the TF-350's a bit too close together, about 5' on center; my ears are about 6' - 7' from them. However, the result is an amazing improvement in imaging! These things image very well. The bass seems to have improved a bit in this arrangement, as well.

The Yammie CR-820's rosewood case should arrive from Merrylander on Monday, so the HK-930 will be going back into its factory box for a while. :tears:

Need to re-center the LP's covers...

It's official. You are the owner of my favorite members system thread. Love the myriad of pieces, the bargains, and the way you've collected them. Very admirable and enviable. Excellent stuff.

Thanks, but I was just looking at your own amazing system, puts my stuff to shame. You and your dog share a very beautiful listening space. Great photographs, too, look like they're straight out of Architectural Digest.

space those tf-350s about 2 ft away from the rear wall and everything gets better.

Forgot about the SAE gear that's been through here (tuna still here, at least for today). Talk about build quality, and that Darth Vader look...

Wow, that brings back college memories. We had that setup driving eight utility LaScalas. That is what you get when your roommates are from Hope, AR. Our whole house was a huge stereo system. We also had an LP noise canceling device made by SAE that would filter out the snap, crackle and pop when playing vinyl.

The whole neighborhood partied at our house. That year we were #1 on Playboys most partying colleges list. We all graduated so I guess it was all good.

Very nice collection BTW.(albums and gear) I never would have let that HH Scott gear out of my collection. I guess that's just me.
