Choosing a silent power amp for control room

I might buy those Infinity Qb, they just look fun. I hope they sound as cool as they look.
weird ass tweeter... these look like they're in pretty good shape for 150. he says all drivers and pots are working, and he says they sound excellent...do you mix on those infinity QB, or just for your home stereo...(daily listening I guess these are for your home stereo)..I'm just curious to hear them now...I wonder how they compare to my jbl 4408, they look similar except the infinity are 3 way with a weird ass tweeter it looks like a slit. MIght be good for my "overheads" in the control room and cheaper than repairing the jbl's..

WIll my HAFLER pro 5000 just blow out those infinity Qb's? they do have a TEN inch woofer which is bigger than the 8' woofer on the 4408, I'm guessing they can take the power, hopefully the tweeters and midrange can handle the HAFLER power level I mean I don't crank it all the way up anyway.;

Honestly, this would be a total no-brainer for me. I'd pitch the amp and the speakers and grab a pair of KEF LS50 Wireless and feed them line level signal. That's the total package and they'll absolutely destroy those JBL in sound quality.

The infinitys are rated 150Watt max power, but they sound better with larger amps. If you don't send the max power to the speakers, it's fine. You can always add a line fuse to protect the speakers.

I think real studio monitors don't sound like plastic boxes. If you have a chance, try to listen to some Adam, Focal, Event 2020, Genelec, Dynaudio , even the small 5" sound pretty good for a small control room. They don't compare to a budget KRK or similar. It's another league.

The Qb are real HI Fi speakers with a very flat freq response. But they were not created as control monitors. I'd say go to listen to them. Being a "budget" model of an expensive brand, I always find hard to compare them to any consumer grade speaker. The EMIT tweeter is something very special. Some people wrote "the best tweeter ever made". They need a protection, many tweeters have been blown. But if you decide to buy them, send me a message or check the Infinity sub-forum for info about the details. The tweeters need to be in good shape, check picts of damaged diaphragms to see what to look for. They come with a fuse, but you need to fit a smaller fuse. Also a new capacitor in the mid-range gives them new life (12uF, not expensive)

The QBs are large, I don't know how large is your control room, but is the room is small, having a too large speaker-woofer is not better. I use them in a 18" x 7" room, and I still think they need a larger room.

The Infinty Qe is the little brother, another great piece of engineering. Awesome sound from those little boxes.

But buying another set of speakers implies you have to fix the Hafler.

Anyway, you need to listen by yourself. In this forums there are thousands of people with different standards. What's good for somebody, it's real crap to somebody else. Just imagine what the owner could think about your JBL and my old Infinity: "Toys".
 
Infinity QB - I heard the EMIT tweeter has poor vertical dispersion but great horizontal. Does that mean these need to sit sideways, not vertically? that's odd...

Those look nice! Can I shut off the "wireless" stuff and use wires with the KEF? I guess so.
I could feed them line level signal with a wire it sounds like.

Those aint too cheap, but thanks for adding this to the discussion...I'm definitely interested, maybe self powered monitors aren't crap anymore. These will probably destroy my alesis monitor one MK2 speakers also...might be worth it if they really will destroy those old jbl's. These KEF's get loud? Fat bass? crystal clean highs? I almost bought those 40 year old Infinity's but I had a feeling someone might chime in with something amazing that's a little newer...500 bucks though...well, might be well worth it. I'm definiitely selling my KRK KR6's...those never impressed me at all.

then there's a crossover upgrade option for those KEF's...bringing the price up even more!

now I'm looking at the Qe. My room is small. the Qe looks very nice. I think I want to get one that's restored or really minty. I dont' want another set of old speakers that need servicing. I guess those Qe's would be excellent, might be my favorite set of speakers. I don't have anything that flat. Everyone uses NS10's in the studios, but I was never bonkers over those. They are flat though. It's good to have some flat monitors in your studio. Yea my "studio" is just a small bedroom, those Qb's might be overkill. But for hiphop, that bass matters... regardless of the room size. I do many types of music, so I want to have a few options for speakers (selling the krk's)

tough call on the infinity's, I found Qe's and Qb's. I do like the idea of having some 10' woofers, even though it's a small room, but the smaller Qe's might be a wiser choice. I wonder if I'll wind up mixing on these instead of the alesis monitor one mk2's (don't laugh! I aint rich here!) Sure I'd love some 10,000 dollar monitors, maybe one day, but for now I have to stretch my dollar, I don't think I can spend even 500 right now..
 
re: infinity Qe and Qb.. How hard is it to swap in new tweeter diaphragms. All the used infinitys I'm seeing, the tweeters look really funky while the woofers look great. hard to tell from a photograph I guess.

I found a nice pair of Qe's and a nice pair of Qb's. SAME price. tough call...
 
If the diaphragm is fine, no need to replace them. Anyway it's a relative easy fix, and new spares are available.

The aluminim ribbon must look flat, not bulged, broken or twisted inside the gaps. Look for picts. The one you posted looks fine, just somebody painted the faceplate.

The tweeter must be vertical at the listening position. You can rotate them in case you place the speakers on it's side.

If you can, go to audition them. The Qe are very serious speakers for a small room. Really hard to beat.

The LS50 allow for several hardwired connection types. The basic design is an evolution of the legendary BBC 3/5 studio monitor. No, they're not going to dig down to the deepest bass, but they're rock solid studio monitors that simply can't be beat for the money. It's not an exaggeration to say that those speakers are a legend in their own time.

I don't think you'll be doing the crossover upgrade on the wireless though. I'm pretty sure it's integrated into the amp section before the amps.

so these tweeters are rotated horizontally, I should rotate them so they are vertical if I set these up vertically? I don't know I usually set speakers up vertically, not sure how much it matters.

Those tweeters are rotated 90º, to use the speakers in horizontal position. To use them vertical as in the pict, they need to be rotated to vertical. In this speaker, it's very important. If rotated, that tweeter doesn't sound OK.

I see the KEF LS50 suggested before, is an expensve speaker, I don't know if that is within your budget, close to $1K

Are those crap?
Some Tannoy's are great and some not so great, I never had a pair of Tannoy's before.
I'm selling my KRK's, and probably getting the Infinity Qe or Qb...but I have room for another set of speakers, thinking about those Tannoy's. They're super cheap, I guess they are definitely not the top of the line Tannoys, but I can't afford those anyway.

yea, those are out of my budget right now. I bet they are amazing though. It's strange they only have one speaker in each cabinet it looks like. Some new technology I guess.

It's a 2 way concentric driver. The tweeter is nested inside the woofer. It's widely regarded as having the best imaging and tonality of any speaker in it's class. It's held it's own against speakers more than 10 times it's price as a Stereophile Class A (Limited) speaker for a couple of years now. It is a legitimate reference quality speaker and it's an absolute steal for what they ask. KEF has them on sale for like $900.
