Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music
I've got a different sort of recommendation.
Last month, I mail-ordered a cheap used copy of Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music by Mark Allen Powell. It was published in 2002 and came with a CD-ROM with the book in a big PDF file.
The book isn't perfect. Its a few years out of date, there are a few omissions (particularly Christ Tree by The Trees Community), and the author (a theologian) likes to criticize songs where he doesn't agree with the theology. For example, he manages to bad-mouth the song "Shotgun Angel" in three different artist entries. He does call things as he sees them, and isn't shy about covering scandals involving CCM figures.
On the plus side, as with the best of music books, it has inspired me to purchase music. I've been purchasing lots of cheap CDs based on what I've read, such as a 99 cent Aaron Sprinkle CD at a local store last week. I've ordered about 10 CDs for $2 or less from Half.com, and added a pile to my wish list to watch for cheap copies in the future. Dietiphobia, Atomic Opera, Caedmon's Call, Paul Colman Trio, Phil Keaggy, Charlie Peacock, The Prayer Chain, Fleming & John, Jars of Clay, Vigilantes of Love, The Aunt Bettys, Rick Altizer, and so on.
Too much music for me to process and recommend, but I can recommend the book for anyone wanting to delve farther into Jesus Music, Christian Rock, and other CCM.

recently stumbled into 'Starflyer 59' which is sort of alt rock.
really, really good stuff (I got 'Gold' and 'Talking Voice/Singing Voice'); would recommend to any music lover, Christian or no.

I would try Relient K, or actually, Megan Krantz. She's a very talented musician, singer/songwriter, and you might not realize she's a Christian artist unless you really listened to the lyrics. I like artists like that. Hope that helps!

Since I asked for stuff that was out of the ordinary I'll list a few I've found that fit that description.
Lecrae - Rebel and Real Talk. Very good Christian rap. Recommended by a friend and I really like it.

Flatfoot 56 - Knuckles Up. Saw them live at Warrior Dash in Crawfordsville, In and like it. Didn't realize they were Christian at the time as I was covered in mud, eating a turkey leg and drinking a beer and they were rocking the joint. They play Christian Celtic punk.

Blues Council - Let the Healing Begin. This is a Christian Blues supergroup featuring Rick Cua and Will McFarlane. They play some in-freakin-credible blues. They and Phil Keaggy put on a benefit concert at Eight Days of Hope last week and it was simply amazing.

Oh, Dear God...If you should ever want to hear why SOME people should NOT be allowed to sing...Just listen to some of the "Christian" groups down here....I KNOW it sez "Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord, All Ye Lands..." But, HONESTLY...They sound WORSE than a couple of Skeletons copulating on a Tin Roof in the middle of a Hailstorm...

I probably said this three years ago, but for the most part, I'm not much of a fan of Christian Music, even though there is some good stuff out there. Paraphrasing C.S. Lewis, I will say that I am very interested in works by musicians who are Christians, as opposed to Christian Music.
That includes some old folks like Bob Dylan, Jorma Kaukonen, T Bone Burnett, Julie and Buddy Miller, Rickie Lee Jones, Emmylou Harris and Bruce Cockburn.
