Short version - a multi-sport football player tells the coach he'll miss a league game Saturday to go to a baseball event where scouts with scholarships will be in attendance. The coach says he'll have to quit the team to do that. 11 other players walk out in support of their teammate, so the school fires the coaches.

So, what do you think? Is there no team loyalty any more? Is the buck worth more than the high school football team?

Tough one there, but I'm thinking the coach should have let him go, especially if he had any sense that his teammates would support him over the coach. But maybe he didn't and maybe he was just out of touch with his charges and this was the last straw for them, as he obviously pissed them all off royally.

If the kid is good enough to be considered for a scholarship, they coach SHOULD encourage him to pursue it; that's the bigger picture and the kids seem to get it.

that's the bigger picture and the kids seem to get it.

I agree with this. The kid's future takes precedence over one game and one team and the coach should have realized that if he had the kid's best interest at heart.

Typical poor reporting from what appears to be a fox news source. Elsewhere it was report that:

Three-sport star Guillermo Salazar had asked permission to miss an Oct. 13 football game so he could attend a baseball competition in Arizona. <...> Coach Christian Mahaffey told him he could not miss the game, so he quit the team. Mahaffey conceded that he had not told the players about this rule in preseason.

Eleven other seniors then quit in support of Salazar, leaving the team with 22 players.

Mahaffey told KCRA 3, "All the seniors were given the opportunity to keep playing. They've quit. We've moved on. I love Guillermo. He's a great kid. He's one heck of a player. But I can't have one of my players playing another sport."

Bolding above is mine. This is what lead up to the coaches getting sacked. They are there to educate and teach, and help futher these kids, they are not to win at all cost. IMO what the seniors did was team loyalty.

+1and +1 Especially if the player was good enough to have a scout look at him
even if not it would have been good experience for the player.

youth sports are very competitive so coaches put a lot of pressure on the kids. I've seen it both ways, some coaches allow it while others don't. It is a team sport, so if you can't make it you are letting your team mates down. Often kids quit playing a sport due to not being allowed to play more than one.
Should the coach of been fired? If he lost control of the team he has to go.

It's high school. The coach lost sight of being an educator and having the kids' best interests in mind. Time for him to go.

This.

The coach should have been focused on the best decision that would help the young man to grow and develop and move forward on his chosen path.

:scratch2: Well I guess we know your opinion.

So it's best to teach the kids that it's all about #1, and f%#@ the team?

Yeah. The kid wasn't being paid to play, it's high school. The kid's duty to take responsibility for his future takes precedence over playing a game. I'd think you'd praise the kid for taking business seriously.

Then you may have guessed wrong.

I understand the opportunity that the boy has with the baseball event. I also understand the importance of being part of a team, and how the rest of the team depends on each other.

I just went through all this. My daughter played 3 sports and it was a nightmare.

Her freshman year she was all-state in one sport, all section in another (set the school single game scoring record) and won the sectional individual title in a third while carrying her team to it's first ever sectional championship.

So everyone wanted her but she needed to play club to elite (she is one of the top 72 player in the country in her primary sport)

The conflicts were unmanageable. Finally after sophomore year she had to quit two of the sports because no coach wanted to compromise. Even when she did this to make peace she was taken aside and told how selfish she was! Now mind you, she quite because she was asked to represent her country in international play!!!

What is the right answer?

I don't know.

I would advise anyone with a genuinely gifted child athlete to concentrate on one sport. I swore when she was young she would be able to play 3 sports in high school but I learned my lesson.

I asked a simple question. I didn't voice an opinion.

No you don't. My daughter who had been in the same situation never missed a high school game or practice EVER. That said it forced her out of two sports. (see above)

I don't know what my opinion is on this but I do know you are not weighing all there is.

The case with the kid (your link) is bogus but he and his family likely don't know it. You don't just show up at a showcase and get discovered. None the less it does not change the subject which is the conflicts in today's sport world.

I don't think the coach should have been fired but beyond that I can't offer an opinion on the subject because there simply are not enough background facts. I will say I think what the kid did by missing a game was "MOST LIKELY" not appropriate and the coach did have to act.

Then he should not have joined the high school team.

I see a young man (mom and dad really) with questionable ethics.

That said I understand the confusion, pressure and allure to run off to a showcase.

I agree.
Myself, and a bunch of friends, did the multi-sport thing in HS. We were good hockey players, and played football for the fun of it. Nobody was going anywhere with football, but many guys ended up with hockey scholarships, some ended up playing professionally(including the NHL). The football coaches knew this, and it was made clear at the start of season that if there was a conflict hockey came first. The last team I played on the coach was smart enough to schedule our hockey practices at the same time as the football ones. It was impossible to do both.
The coach in the article should have communicated team policy at the start of the season, IMO.
