Colon Cleansing?

I think it's a bunch of hooey.

Back when we were dealing with my father in law's and my wife's diverticulosis/diverticulitis and we were getting our 5-Oh colonoscopies, I ran into some of these "colon cleaners" where they show this big mass of poo and junk that gets cleaned out. After reading more about it, it appears that the mass of poo is actually the cleaner that has hydrated in your system and expanded to a stringy mass several times the initial dose, and become covered with poo during it's intestinal journey.

Kind of like a reverse of those miracle cleaners that wipe away the loose dirt and readily soluble stains in commercials, this stuff is not the wonder it claims to be.

It's not the bunch of **** it shows, but it is a bunch of ****. :D

The cheapest way to go about this is to buy 100% pure Psyllium husk. Start with about a teaspoon and mix into a glass of water until it turns into a viscous goo (about 5 mins), then down the hatch. Chase with at least one large glass of water.

There are several colon cleanse blends on the market that usually take the Psyllium husks and mix with one or more herbs. After trying quite a few, my favorite was Michael Tierra's Tri Cleanse.

As far as I can tell, the word is still out as to whether these products actually do anything for people who already eat a relatively healthy high fiber diet. I sure don't think they can hurt though.

From my experience, the absolute best thing one can do for their body (through nutrition) is to buy a juicer and consume fresh juices. They can be quite powerful though, so it's best to do your homework and start small. A good all round juice is carrot/apple/small amounts of beet and celery.

Actually, that's the real issue. If one were to eat proper foods, these products would have no use. But America's gluttony for the trash we call food these days is manifested in our rampant obesity and diverticulosis, which affects most folks over 50, both which would be severely reduced if we made better food choices.

My doctor recomends eating pinapple (a large can of chunks or pulp).
wash it down with a full glass of 75% prune juice and 25% sparkeling water.
Read the following for humor only,If you don't like potty humor don't go there!

Has anyone done this? For some unknown reason I have been thinking about doing this. At almost 56 years old I wonder if it would be beneficial?

I did it, not necessarily by choice, by drinking the special "Kool Aid" before a colonoscopy.

Clean as a whistle according to the doctor...:D

A glass of water with some Epsom salts dissolved in it will clean you out big time. Just don't think you'll let a little stinker slip out 'cause I guarantee you'll get more than you bargained for.

Colon cleansing is, without a shred of doubt, total quackery. I wouldn't normally post in threads like this, but the process is dangerous, and your health would be in jeopardy. Don't do it.

From the Wikipedia article:

Colon cleansing is not necessary as the body naturally removes waste material.[4][14] Colon cleansing may disrupt the balance between bacteria and natural chemicals in the bowel, and may interfere with the colon's ability to shed dead cells.[15] Other rare but serious complications include gastrointestinal perforation from improper insertion,[16][17] and amoebic infection from poorly sterilised equipment.[18] Some colon cleansing regimes disrupt fluid and electrolyte balance which may lead to dehydration and salt depletion, whilst repeated or excessive cleansing programs can lead to anemia and malnutrition.[14] Excessive use of enemas have also been associated with cardiac problems such as heart failure,[14] and heart attacks related to electrolyte imbalances when used with coffee.[19] The frequent use of enemas or other colon cleansing tools may lead to dependence and an inability to defecate without assistance or withdrawal symptoms.[2][5] Herbs that are consumed for colon cleansing and taken as oral preparations may also interfere with drug absorption and effectiveness.[5]

i had a bunch of friends try it and liked it.. and so i started reading as much as i could find.. turns out its not really..

some of the stuff they show in the pics on the CC websites is really just all the fiber from the mix that is kinda coagulating.. nothing stays in there it all gets worked out in the end ;0 LOL

Oh, I got an enema joke.

This guy really loves his coffee, has to have it no matter what. So he gets in an accident and his jaw gets broken. It's wired shut and he can't eat or drink anything for awhile after surgery. He writes a note demanding coffee. They tell him sorry but no. He says OK then give me a coffee enema. So they give him a coffee enema. They're pumping the stuff in and he starts squirming and grunting. "What's the matter sir, is it too hot?" the nurse asks him, very concerned. He grunts between his teeth..."No...too schweet!"

Due to some ongoing health issues I had my first C-scope this year at the ripe old age of 34. I hear they are now selling pills that you can wash down with water as a prep method: I did the "drink a gallon of mineral water mixed with gatorade" route, and wsa disgusted every minute of it. Next time I'm looking in to the pills...
