Comedy hifi-related injuries - anyone had any ?

Not real funny, but I have had both Hernia and Back surgery and along with lots of other stupid stuff, lifting and carrying my Counterpoint amp put me over the edge and helped blow a disk out. I didn't know I had the Hernia until a routine physical 2 years ago. Pretty sure they are related.

Not sure anymore, whether it was an audio or a data cable I was soldering, when I felt an itch at the root of my nose/between my eyes and absent-midendly scratched myself - with the soldering iron... Ouch. Quite a painful experience, so: Children, don't try that at home or anywhere else. ;)

Otherwise I wouldn't have much to report other than being a bit out of breath from carrying heavy und unpleasant to carry pieces of equipment a couple of times.

Greetings from Munich!

I'll chime too,,, Had audio-related injuries twice!
1. Was fixing something and had my soldering iron on a desk (where it belong-in a cradle). Reached for something and knocked iron from there.
"Thanks" to my excellent (back then) reflexes I grabbed it in mid-air...too bad I caught the wrong end of it! Ouch! It was hot!!!!!

2. Bought some Adcom amp from CL. Big and really heavy (don't remember the model). Drove home really excited to try it..Pulled in a garage, opened the trunk, grabbed the box, lifted it and....AAAAAAAAA! My back!!!!!!
I couldn't stand! Lay on a floor for maybe 10 minutes...and then....managed to push the box into the house (crawling!!!!), hooked it up to some speakers (still laying on a floor!!!) and listened....Call it dedication....

Dave's Insanity ?

Actually, I hear there are even hotter ones now.
Nah, it was pre-ghost pepper craze. I think maybe Scottish bonnet with a hint of banana. Probably had
"death" in the title somewhere. I seldom go past El Yucateco in price or heat these days since its a good, flavorful sauce that you can get almost anywhere.

Pouring any sort of pepper sauce, no matter how weak, directly on your junk is going to make you have a bad day.

Some good stuff here...

A number of years ago, I was just getting my "Realistic setup" put together. I happened upon a a GREAT deal on a pair of really nice NOVA 7b speakers, for $15!
Was beyond stoked. I got home with them after work and of course had lots of "family stuff" to do, but found a few minutes to run the speakers downstairs to my system.
Was so excited about getting these speakers I grabbed one, ran it downstairs. Ran back up grabbed the second one...
But on my second trip down stairs (running) I slipped and fell on the stairs about mid-way down.
Speaker went flying, tore a hole in the drywall of the stair well and damaged the banister. I on the other hand went straight back and landed with the "edge of a stair" right into the back of my neck.
I honestly laid there for a moment, hoping (praying) I wasn't paralyzed.

Ended up okay, but with a massive bruise on my neck/shoulders.
Some drywall repair and banister repair and of course a wife none to pleased with my "excitement."
Most importantly the speaker that flew, had no real signs of damage short of a small "ding."

Tell you what though, I don't have that house anymore but still have the NOVA 7b speakers singing along :)

Sounds like good rule of whatever to never put anything in your mouth that you wouldn't introduce to Mr Happy.

Try one of these bad boys ...

People who tell you to lift with your knees, not your back, assUme you have knees to lift with ... ;-}

If I saw a Citation-II or Mac 275 on the roadside it'd probably darn near kill me to get it in the car. One of the 100lb+ amps? FUGEDDABOUDIT!

Mine's a lightweight comparatively speaking ...

The McAmp is only 85 pounds ...Then again, with vinyl, the rack weighs in at over 600. Moves surprisingly well with a whole bunch of teflon gliders underneath. More worried about the floor collapsing than popping anything trying to move it. Couple hundred pounds of speakers don't help things any in that regard. <G>

I think I'll stay away from the McHernia brand. Maybe I'll go with a 200 gram chip amp.
So here is a little hernia humor, if there can be hernia humor?

There once was a man with a hernia,
Who said to his doc, gol'dernia,
When you're working down there,
You had better take care,
And don't mess with what don't concern ya!

A few years ago I built a new very tall rack that rolled under an even higher shelf. One of my cats discovered that she could jump from the top of a speaker onto the top of the rack when pulled out for maintaince, then up to the above shelf, where there was an open air duct.
I decided to put a couple of boxes up there to block her access.... While doing this standing on a 2' step stool, I slipped and went over backward, hooked my arm in the looped arm of my recliner, which now flipped over my head. I went to get up and realized my left hand was flopping loosely. Gee, I wish I had not done that..... Broke my wrist in two places.
I still love the curious cat.

My first job was delivering pizza. I had the typical teenage car filled with subwoofers, etc. I had just bought some huge service entrance cable to use as my amplifier power (LOL), and I couldn't wait to install it. There was a lull in the pizza business that day, and my boss asked if I wanted to go home, on call, and take a pager with me. I said sure! Threw the pager in my pocket and ran out.

I got home, ran the cable through the car, connected the battery end, then climbed into my trunk to connect the amplifier end (unfused of course!). I am holding this unnecessarily huge cable, and I cut into it with a utility knife to strip it. Just as my knife contacts the conductors, that damn pager starts vibrating! Having been shocked severely several times in my life already, my brain processed holding a huge wire and the vibrating of the pager as yet another electrocution. I dropped the wire and jumped up and smashed my head on the trunk lid.

Another time, my OCD got me injured. We had just moved into a new house. I reused some existing shelves that were in the basement. Typical CoogarXR style, I piled WAY too much stuff on the shelves. Mostly car audio gear. Anyhow, I kept noticing that the shelf sat kinda crooked. So I squatted down and was going to shim one of the legs to level the shelf. As I lifted the leg, the crap on the shelf shifted and an old amplifier fell and landed fins-first on the back of my head! That was a bit of a bloodbath...

One time I was working on a Sansui 500A, I was adjusting the bias of the output tubes. To do that you need the cathode voltage, so what I did was I put the DMM grip on the cathode and ZAP. I completely forgot that I took the rubber covers off of the DMM grips. Whoops. That cathode read out at about 430V by the way.
