Comments on the jobs poll results !

I think the idea of the thread was to have a bit of fun and find out a little more about those of us who frequent this forum. Obviously, it is not all encompassing nor was it meant to be. Any conclusion drawn from the results is for entertainment purposes only.

Personally, I found it interesting and enjoyable to read all the posts, and felt no need to compare my occupation or income to those of others. I love what I do and it meets the needs of my family. On the other hand…I would really love to be a “kept man”.

Reading this thread made me feel sick. This forum is supposed to be no attitude, just music. I make a good living , so what. I also take a week off from work every year to raise money for homeless children, I donate to charity, I do charity care etc and try to set a good example for my kids. Audio gear, fancy cars, watches are a weakness and I go out of my way not to shove them in anybodies face . Discussions like this do not bring out the best side. It takes no talent to like nice things.

In all fairness, the forum is to discuss audio produced by a brand which is associated with conspicuous consumption. You are on a forum with a slavish devotion to those who consume and all of the advice seems to be consume more. Virtually everyone has their system on their signature as if it conveys some degree of credibility based upon consumption.

That said your post shows disdain for the very consumption you are encouraging. To top it off you have decided to offer us "a holier than thou" discussion of charity.

Respectfully let me share:

Making a good living is a blessed thing and it allows you to forward your agenda --- I hope your agenda is a positive one. I honestly care what people do for a living and I care even more that they are excited and motivated by how they make a living.

Many of us fully understand the popular wave of reverse snobbery where people who are outwardly affluent are viewed as shallow, but what could be more shallow than thinking that a taste for a few quality consumer goods is somehow incompatible with being a spiritual person who devotes time effort and money to the benefit the greater society.

Okay, what is a lawer?

I too have heard the rumor that lawyers, doctors and people with too much money and no hearing are the group that buys Mc. Sort of always wondered about that as a large % of those who go to the opera, ballet, classical orchestra performances, etc. are in that backet and hence probably have more exposure to acoutical sound than others.

However, many of the owners of Mc gear I know are not in those perceived income brackets and are teachers, muscians, and accountants. Admittedly most purchased their gear years aago when Mc was more affordable in relation to other consumer brands.

Absolutely !!
That's why I had the idea of this poll.

I was not interested in the income by itself. I don't judge people with their level of income, their kind of job etc... I just don't care.
My friends have many different jobs.
I was interested in 2 things :
1) what is the FIELD of occupation of Mc owners ? Does Mc owners can be found in many different job categories ? No matter how much you paid for your gear. No matter if you bought it new or SH. No matter what is your income. If Mc is present in many categories, that would show that Mc is about MUSIC. Not snobism, exterior sign of wealthness etc...
That's all about this forum : "All audio. No attitude".
2 ) Meeting some people who do "exciting jobs ". For me, a construction worker or a farmer and so on makes an exciting job. Because I only know teeth....

Please, do not fight about money / jobs considerations.
See what unifies us. We are just simple human beings. We will all die one day and we'll be eaten by insects. And we love MUSIC.
Don't you see how much we have in common ?

Best wishes to all my brothers here !!!

My friend Lionking,

You're right here on almost everything except the point about the "signature".
I think most of us put their gear, because this way it's easier to know who has the same gear as you, and compare our experiences....

Of course, our signature does not define us.
Nobody know me here. So what would be the point of a signature showing " how good is my material" or "how wealthy I am " ??

Best wishes,

I get to meet many owners of McIntosh and other brands of good sounding audio gear, it all needs a tweak now and then so it eventually ends up at my shop. The interesting thing is I see no boundaries in the classification what the owners make or do for a living, I have lawyers, doctors, farmers, and even a starving artist, they all have one thing in common, they love good sounds. Often the equipment is inherited, bought at garage sales, or bought new, once herd they all fall in love with the quality and sound of good equipment and many will hold on to it for a lifetime of enjoyment, some will upgrade, but few drop out once hooked.

I didn't take the survey because I wasn't aware of it until I saw this thread commenting on the results. That said, I probably wouldn't have taken it anyway.

I will say this: I learned a great deal about people who own McIntosh gear not from the poll but from the response to the questions I've posed in this forum and from reading the responses provided to others.

What did I learn? That, for the most part, you're a helpful bunch who take pride in the high end equipment that you own and with good reason. Thanks for your help and I wish you all enjoyable listening.

My take on the poll? Couldn't have been scientific and undoubtedly wasn't intended to be. Nothing wrong with a 'just for fun' exercise once in a while.

Cheers.

Like most things in life, this thread and the survey must be taken with a severe pinch of salt. We all enjoy listening to music with equipment we think are the best suited to it and that's basically it.

One's background really ought not to matter nor should it be the subject of debate of their right to own Macs or whatever.

Just chill and enjoy your music on your McIntosh.

BTW.... I am actually a lawyer doing mostly debt recovery work for banks. LOL!!!!

No hard feelings as to you vocation. My brother has a law firm in Ft. Myers, Florida, where the President just visited, and he is a bankruptcy lawyer with more business than one can imagine. when I had my practice in the same area most of my court room time was doing evidentiary hearings in bankruptcy court representing debtors.

Here is my two cents. It doesn't matter what you do for a living to support yourself and your family, or your audio habit, as long as you are doing the best you can do.

What really matters is how you act as a person in life, not how much bacon you bring home compared to the other guy.

We all start off the same taking our first breath, and all end the same taking our last, we just take different paths getting there.

Amen and may it be many years before that breath :music:
