Compact, budget system for the den?

Hello all,

I'm in the process of making a little den sized room into a workout space. I'd like to
have a nice compact but reasonably good sounding system that receives FM, and could take
alternate sources (like bluetooth).

For reference, our good system is a couple of Vandersteen 2A's with an ADCOM GFA-545 amp plus GTP-500 tuner/preamp.
We don't play the system loud, I'd be shocked if we ever had it at more than 5 watts of output. Maybe 10 watts for
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon a couple of times.

I am in no way intending to make the den sound that good!

I'm not looking for specifics, but would wonder how to think about a system for a den, that
sounds "good enough" given it's job is to be background while I focus on working out, and not take
up much physical space, and do it on the cheap ;-)

This is where I am at for starters:
---
I have on order a Fosi Audio BT20A stereo amplifier, that has bluetooth, line in, and output for
two speakers, 100W max per speaker. Handles speaker impedances of 2 to 8 ohms.

For input, bluetooth, and I'll use the headphone output from one of my numerous nice portable receivers.

First I'll try the headphone out to line in directly (I know about the impedance mismatch issue), and just
see how it sounds. If it sounds good enough then I'm done.

I also have 300:1 audio transformers I can try to get the impedances closer between the headphone out and
line in on the amp. If that doesn't work I may have to go find a real FM receiver with a line out.

For speakers, I looked at the thrift shop, and there are a few sets of low end bookshelfs for about $15 a pair.
Found some Panasonic PM22's that were divorced from the full system, not beat up, nice aesthetics. The specs
say they are 30W, 6 ohm. Large driver is 14cm (about 5.5 inch), tweeter is 8cm (about 3 inch). Crossover freq is 110Hz.

I think these speakers are not awful, and may be okay enough for what I need.
---

Do you think I'm on the right track in my thinking? Is there something else I should consider?

Thanks for reading and any of your thoughts!
Jeff

Small receiver from Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo? We have an Onkyo R805X receiver on top of the fridge. Lots of inputs plus a tape loop, plenty of power, 20 W/ch. Pair of small speakers, (Sony SS_CPX22s), good to go!

That Onkyo is an interesting option. I wasn't aware there were smaller footprint receivers from better brands like that. Thanks!

Why not just get some brand new bookshelf speakers like this...

They are cheap enough.

I gave a friend of mine that same Fosi amp. He uses bluetooth from the computer but also has a small switch box connected to the line in so that he can listen to the TV through it or a CD player. Switch boxes are good for having more than one line in input...

They would be another $60 beyond the thrift store price, but they look like a much better option. I will seriously consider those. Not sure I'd need a switchbox, but good to know about. Thanks!

"Budget" is a moving target, is $15 for speakers the max? Same for the other pieces?

For me the Emotiva and Schiit stuff in my sig is "budget" gears, maybe not so much for others.

Look at Schiits offerings for compact size.

Sounds like you're good to go at this point and need to wait for the BT20 to show up and start testing the FM signal quality. Grab the $15 speakers for now and see what you think. If they're not what you want then sit and wait for something better to come along. I'd find something used rather than the Dayton B65 new...they sound okay but nothing special for $90 after shipping and tax.

Edit: search this on ebay and you can hear a short video sample of the thrift store speakers in the listing: "Panasonic SA-PM22 Mini Stereo System CD Radio/Tape Deck with speakers SB-22"

If serious about a compact minimalist system for what you're going to use it for, I'd recommend considering the Emotiva BasX TA1 Stereo Preamp/DAC/Tuner with Integrated Amplifier. All you'll need with it are speakers.

Speakers being the pieces that effect sound the most, reconsider the spending limit, even at the detriment of other gear. There’s little bookshelf speakers that are pretty good that aren’t expensive, but finding anything decent for $15 is going to be tough.
I am a fan of the little Boston Acoustics, the CR 65 in particular. Under $50 used.
A decent brand named receiver from the 90’s are nearly free these days. A Chromecast Audio if you can find one will take care of Bluetooth. I bought 4 when they were $10.

How about the B40's? Occasionally they have an open box pair for around $30.

Think just a pair of powered bookshelf speakers will work for everything.
Yeah, if not, check local craigslist/FBmarketplace for something used.

Budget is indeed a moving target. Compactness is really key. I think I'd spend up to $120 for speakers if they were smaller. I don't want to play the music loud, but want to have a nice experience possible.

For example the goodwill "blah" speakers at $15 are 11.3 x 7 inches (H x W), while the boston acoustic CR65's are 10.1 x 6.4 inches at aprox $70. If those were my only choices it's a no brainer to get the CR65's.

I will build up a list of possible speakers and see what the options are. It will probably be an ebay/goodwill purchase in the end so I'll have to trust the condition of the speakers...

Thank you.

Curious as to what genres of music you tend to listen to, jj. ?

Pretty wide range. The community college local station KBCS 91.3 FM, in the afternoon has a great DJ. For example I didn't know there was some country/western that I could like until he exposed me to it.

For the most part I listen to folk, lighter rock, americana, traditional irish. Anything from the wayback machine when recordings became higher quality (about 1940 or so), to artists recording today.

What do I not listen too?
Opera
Rap
Twangy country
Eastern European

Love my Dayton 6.5 outdoor Speakers !

The Super Zero's are 5 x 5.5 x 9". They have rubber surrounds, so no worry about foam rot. Currently a pair on ebay at a good price.

Since your listening area will be short time (workout place) and not into heavy rock requiring deep bass, perhaps a pair of vintage "Minimus 7's" might be in order. They are have a small footprint and can hit above their weight. I've seen some online in the $50 range, so not that pricey.
