Computer Madness

I'd been using Microsoft XP Pro for many years. Than about 2 weeks ago I started having computer problems. I guess someone hacked me and messed things up. I sent my computer to an expert I know to have him fix it. Well, he decided to eliminate XP and load Windows 7 on my notebook. While doing so he also eliminated a bunch of things from the machine that I had come to depend on. On top of not having some of the old software, I now have to learn how to understand Win 7 and figure out how to use it.
I believe that Microsoft doesn't support XP any longer, but I sure was comfortable with it.

Written to you using XP64. I tried 7 but found it a bit "prissey" for me. Haven't a clue on 8. I wonder why they started at 7 as the last numbering was 98?

thats a bummer, I still like XP for home but win 7 at work.

Next time, try a system restore from safe mode before trusting a geek squadron

Free yourself and download and install Linux Ubuntu. Such a breeze to use and no worries. You can leave Windows and make your machine dual boot just in case you ever feel the need for a taste of corporate monopoly operating system. What specific software did you lose the ability to use?

I was used to XP and then my computer got taken out by a power surge. Had to get a new Dell with 7. It only took me a month or so to get used to it, and I liked it immediately. You will, too once you get used to it.

I feel your pain and understand all too well what you are going through. For the last five or so months I have been the opperations manager for a local company that relies heavily on their mixture of XP machines, Windows 2000 machines, 64 bit Windows 7 machines and an internal network of Proprietary DOS based machines (THEOS actually) that use serial connections. I am not a trained IT guy just self-taught by the school of hard knocks growing up with the earliest computers. I had have been "blessed" with the care and feeding of all this crap. What a mess! Getting printers to work seems like it should be simple - but it sure isn't!

Good luck with your journey. Some of those "for Dummies" books can be very helpful.

I'm still using XP and get updates from Microsoft quite often. I'll keep using it until it's ground into dust.

Anything you want to know how to do on Windows 7 post it here, I can probably help you.

XP is still available for purchase. I bought three XP Professional SP3 packages just a couple of months ago from:

www.viosoftware.com

My company has applications which require the 32-bit XP version. Windows 7 isn't that difficult to understand, but I prefer XP as well. Windows 8 forgetaboutit, different animal. There's a bit more of a learning curve.

Seriously I know Linux used to suck but it has brought several of my friends and I machines back to life. I tried it as a last ditch effort and was more than pleasantly surprised how easy it is to install and navigate. It is like a collective FU to Microsoft and Apple since everything is FREE and constantly updated by users making it almost entirely threat free. Also if anything screws up, your files are on a different partition than your OS and it is a quick easy fix.

Windows 7 is great from an audio enthusiast point of view. The WASAPI implementation is great for audio playback.

It's also a great OS as far as stability goes. I haven't crashed Windows 7 once on any of my four systems, and I multitask like crazy.

Thats what I did. Back about 10 years ago I switched from Windows XP to Debian cold turkey, with no prior Linux experience. The first 2 months were a headache, but now Microsoft OSes are rather primitive in comparison. Its nice being able to do what you want with your software.

Maybe I should have explained it better. When he was fixing my machine and loading Win 7, he deleted a bunch of stuff, and some of it was software that I had loaded over the last 7/8 years. Now I have to try and find it somewhere and reload it unless I can learn to live without it, or get something better.

Yah I was just hoping I could help point you to something better and opensource, be it desktop publishing or photo manipulation or whatever.

Ha, I haven't used XP for so long, I kinda forget what it's like. ;) Win 7 really isn't bad at all, there's just an adjustment period. It is a lot more stable than XP, but also a lot more trouble, in some ways. I "used" to enjoy overclocking, but it's just too much trouble, to reinstall the OS anymore. It's not just an hour or 2 of time anymore, it's more like a day or 2, by the time you get everything up to date & running well, starting from scratch. :thumbsdn: Hey, kinda drifting off-topic, but I found an old copy of Doom 3 in a thrift last night, & played it for a few hours. :D

I have (2) hard drives in my system, one has Win7 the other XP. I switch back and forth.

Good Luck,

If you tell us what some of it is we can probably help you find it or a replacement. One thing I can tell you; if you have ever downloaded software and paid for it, many of the software companies have a record that you registered and will allow you to download a free replacement. Nero is one of those.

Well, different lineage for sure -- the 9X version died with Windows ME. Thank god.

The NT kernel started on the business side -- Vista was NT 6.0, Windows 7 is NT 6.1, hence the Windows 7 designation.
