Computer Madness

To the OP -- what version of Windows 7 are you running? Home Premium, Pro, Ultimate?

Pro and Ultimate support an XP mode that could be useful to you.

The change from XP to Win 7 was annoying. In order to enable to keep things the way I'm used to since 2001, I added a handful of third-party programs:
ShellFolderFix
ClassicShell
Network Activity Indicator
File Types Manager
Ultimate Windows Tweaker

Then I went into Themes to get the good ol' classic Win 95/2000 GUI.
Now, looking at my desktop, you'd never know it's Win 7. Perfect.

Made the big switch to Linux about 4 years ago. I now run Linux Mint. One of these days (hopefully not too far into the future) people will realize that open source OS's are so much better, safer, & FREE to run. Computers should be easy & free for mankind. When you inject money and power into it you KNOW that ultimately it will enslave people, not serve.

... and of course first thing he did was run a complete backup of your XP install ... if not, you owe him a severe beating with a keyboard ...

One of the problems you'll run into with older software is compatibility, so you would have probably had "issues" with your older software anyways. I picked up on a copy of Windows 8 Pro before they jacked the price so I could take advantage of the improved WASAPI sound handling and the speed and memory capabilities of a 64 bit system on my HTPC. Didn't want to deal with having to reinstall everything, so I just did a shrink on the original XP partition and set it up to dual boot either OS as needed. You basically end up with two separate computers in one box. Only thing I installed on the W8 side is the jRiver server software and visualizations - no password, and the box boots right into the Media Center front end. Simple matter to reboot into the old XP system for doing vinyl rips and whatnot.

PS ... one of the first things I did on the W8 side was install StartMenu8. With a few clicks, you can make tiles and metro go away and be looking at the same layout as the "normal" Windows we've seen over the last 20 years. Whoever came up with that crap can (#^%R the *#^# and ^@$%@^! ... and the horse they rode in on too!

I have Windows 7 Pro version, so I've found out about the XP mode.

He wanted to put Windows 8 on, but I use Windows FrontPage for a website I run, and 8 won't support FrontPage.

Since Microsoft doesn't support FrontPage any longer, is there another simple, beginners level website software that anyone is familiar with?

This will be my next journey when my current win 7 Desktop dies...!
NEVER understood the logic behind the necessity of having to purchase a new OS each and every time we purchase a new computer.....
I ALREADY GAVE YOU PLENTY OF MONEY FOR YOUR OS ONCE...!

Seriously I know Linux used to suck but it has brought several of my friends and I machines back to life. I tried it as a last ditch effort and was more than pleasantly surprised how easy it is to install and navigate. It is like a collective FU to Microsoft and Apple since everything is FREE and constantly updated by users making it almost entirely threat free. Also if anything screws up, your files are on a different partition than your OS and it is a quick easy fix.

Can you give more information to do this please? I am interested!
