Here is the Concept 16.5 that I picked up a couple of months ago, all nice and
cleaned up. It is in surprisingly nice condition.

It looks like it is in very nice condition, and you did a great job cleaning it up. Let us know how it sounds.

Serial number 102416, is it? Thanks.

All the best,

Hi,
No, it is S/N 101657, it is much, much nicer than the one I got from Marko, which pretty much a doorstop until I can locate a power switch for it.

Mine had seen some rough treatment.
Did I mention I drove 4 hours each way to rescue it?

First thing, unstuck the power switch. Carefully unbent it. This lights red during time-on delay, then goes out, doesn't go green. Common condition, someone's even published a fix; I don't care at the moment--everything works that makes music. :music:

I had to bend the bottom cover plate flat by removing and stepping on it because somebody had ahem! dropped it...

Of course cleaning the paint :screwy: off the knobs... Unlike my car, it was 'garaged'.

A knob is lost somewhere in the aether, but I'm on the lookout for any 3.5 (or whatever) and swap that in. So it's wearing a Sansui knob on the Loudness button... :stupid:

It's in the center showcase space now, happily taming the Klipsch RF-7s' triple 50-ounce magnets. Thermometer and fan accessories.

I'm mystified by its sound. Scared to do the simplest, least invasive thing lest I disturb it. I'll Frankenstein my whole circus of BPC, and the Optonica, new Luxman, even the Sansui--

First 16.5 not my last.

.

I wonder if all 16.5s were shipped with the left 7A fuse at 250V, instead of the 125V like it says. At least 3 have been discovered with them.

Beautiful receiver, I'm lovin' the dual transformers.

It's one of three dual transformer receivers I have, the other two are an Onkyo TX 8500 (110 wpc) and a Harman/Kardon 730 (45 wpc).

I was really happy to find one in such nice shape cosmetically, it has nary a scratch. I may have to load a couple of pics in photobucket so I can post some in high res.

Oh, 250v fuses are prefereble, as in the event of a short, they will extinguish the arc more quickly than 125v fuses.

Susurus: The red to green LED needs to be replaced. I was never able to find a replacement LED so I had to take one off a parts machine. What knob are you missing? Sam.

congrats Tarior. is getting a on/off switch a daunting task on these receivers???. I just bought a 16.5 last week off Ebay and its being shipped today ... i have everything crossed but my eyes hoping it arrives safely. Can't wait, after hearing my 6.5 and all the accolades from this place....

Someone beat me to a lot of power switches for these receivers about three months ago, and I haven't seen any since. I haven't really applied myself to devising a workaround for it yet, as I have several receivers in this class.

One of my biggest complaints about the 16.5 is the lack of a soft-start circuit to mitigate the inrush current. All of the current needed to charge the filter caps goes right through the power switch. I highly recommend replacing the snubber caps on all 16.5s.

16.5 vs. new Luxman R-1050 shootout...

Today's haul: Luxman R-1050. Hi beeeyoo ti ful.
Huge tuner knob, rediculously wide-spaced knurls.
Not even a bent knob axle...

Elegant front panel. Nearly no smoke smudges.

*Johnny Storm test (the power on switch) : (no big black smoky eminations from the power transistors...

Okay, lights do work... maybe too well! There's plenty of light shining through the back grills-- hey is this supposed to be tubes? 1978 Huh?

VU meters work~! Now I'm content.

No-Antenna test. Yep! catches plenty of Stereo stations.

Mini-Shootout, pt.1 Tuner sections

Headphones test, big revealing Sony MDR-600 Neodymium/ 40mm Drivers.

Same channel, back and forth,
between the 16.5 and the new Luxman. Neither of these have been aligned/adjusted, so it's all preliminary observations...

Lux: Mids very clear. Clean. Percussive strikes on target and fast. :thmbsp: This seems Yamaha-like, but faster-responding... and better than any Onkyo I've ever owned (not had a TOTL Onk like Tarior's ...yet :thmbsp:)

Well, what's going on, now I see, the 16.5's Loudness control is backwards. Wrong way, the emphasis warped. That's a very counterintuitive control. And the tape monitor cables introduced crosstalk from the Comcast box... arghhh.

The Luxman's so good it made me further optimise the 16.5. Convinced that alone justifies the pennies I bought it for. Is it's tuner superior? It is... different.

Match output levels (headphones, not tried speaker A/B yet), the Lux's mids seemed more distinct, airy. Or is it that the 16.5 is fuller, richer, with more accurate bass? Or is this a memory effect from listening to the 16.5 with the loudness messed up for a week?

Shootouts get harder the higher you go in quality!

Is this R-1050 performing like a R-117? I can't wait to see that one!

A couple hours of jazz, the Lux absolutely was a worthy contender. I just get it, these are solidly a cut above my ~45 watter Sansui and Onk (For my ear/brain). Who knows if the Sansui would be better matched up to some ARs? I have no Vintage loudspeakers... yet!

Now switch to classic rock, higher volumes. Still on headphones. The bass power starts to show lagging behind the 16.5's limitless reserves. Can't tell if it's the tuner section ... no pre-outs!! :tears:

More from this suprising Luxman soon...

MCS 3125 vs. Luxman???

I will find that site with pics detailing fixing the switch LEDs.

Lukily the missing knob was the volume (or loudness or balance, they are the same). Not the combo inner/outer tone control type.

As far as I've found, doolies:

Concept 16.5
Onkyo TX-8500 Mk II
Onkyo TX-6500/(MKII)
Wintech 1120
Akai AA-1120
JCX-2900K, Plus130 and Plus200
Some other H/Ks

My pet theory is that they originally came with unmatched fuses. The 250v one was on the left in both cases I'm aware.

But that could just mean it's more likely to fry on that side. Do you recommend a specific quality brand? If old original ones could possibly degrade the signal path... they will be unceremoniously discarded.

He he! just try to pretend it's just another receiver. No expectations... Perception can be significantly affected by preconception...

Don't want anybody to think you're a pushy Concept-o-phile like me... :nutz:

Tarior, the push on/delay is different from a soft on? Which brand has soft-on so I can see it? (Besides my Athlons and P4s.)

Of my big receivers, the Sansui G 9000 and Pioneer SX 1250 have a soft start, which charges the main filter caps through a big power resistor. After the caps have charged, a relay bypasses the resistor, and a few seconds after that, the mute relay connects the amplifier outputs to the speakers.
As far as a new switch goes, I have just been trying to find one by part number or style.

This is my third and nicest 16.5. I sold my first one to finance the purchase of a McIntosh MC 2300 (which ended up being sold a year and a half later due to a money crunch, I was a full time student.) I still have the other two, one will be for sale after I repair it.
I also have a 6.5 that I just picked up.

I picked up a 16.5 in very nice condition. This one was listed on the Seattle CraigsList last month for 300 bones. I saw someone had pointed it out in the Dollars and Sense forum here. I called four days after it had listed, and amazingly the original owner says he only received one phone call from someone up in Canada (maybe a member here?) but were a no-show. It is serial # 101911 and a matched set of 125V fuses. I have'nt found the time to really toy with it, but I have it connected to a Kabuki stack consisting of a set of Pioneer CS-907A on the bottom with a set of Sansui SP-Z9 on top. BIG BIG sound!

A soft start circuit can be added to any unit. Some time ago EchoWars posted a circut for it. Also, CDfixer made up some pc boards with all the components on it. It is a very neat installation.

Also, many power switches are a generic part. The switches that Sansui used in many models are still available. Can you post a picture of the switch?

- Pete
