That would be me and I STILL have no regrets, I'd take the axe to them again, err... maybe that was a mistake because it seems that they have a following (coulda had some$$ for them) but I for one am not in this following.
They are huge with very, very low WAF (these mademy vandersteen 2's look beautiful to the wife) and are IMO about on par with some of the sansui kabuki's-lots of sound,none of it good (in MY OPINION).
the cabs are cheap, the drivers marginal, dampening/bracing near non-exsistant.

I have a pair of CE2's and I really like them. On eBay ESS speakers usually sell really well. The speakers alone, if they are in as good a shape as he says they are, are probably worth $500. They are worth a look/listen if you are close.

I have had plenty of chance to A/B a pair of CE-2s against a pair of Rectilinear III's, a pretty highly regarded speaker here on AK, driven by an 165 wpc amp (yes, the 16.5, SoCalSam).

Although I like both speakers, the CE-2 wins hands down in terms of:

1) High and mid clarity and detail
2) "Openess"

The CE-2s need a bit of volume for the bass to open up, and the Rectilinears have definitely a more pronounced bass, but I can't decide if its bass is quite right or not: At time, the Recti's bass sound a little muddy.

Together, and at low volumes, they actually sound great stacked. At higher volumes, the CE-2s give me a full soundstage on their own.

FYI, the CE-2s are smaller than the CE-1, but I believe with similar, if not identical drivers; the main difference that the CE-2 has a rear-facing passive.

Firewood? Never in a million years!

Your last thread about turning Concept speakers into firewood, qboneus, was about the CE-M. Which one is it that you have heard, qboneus - the CE-M or the CE-1? The CE-M was the BOTL monitor, the CE-1 the TOTL floorstander. It seems to me to give negative review of a TOTL unit on the basis of auditioning a BOTL is not particularly credible - would you expect the A/D/S 2030's to sound like the A/D/S 100's, or the Marantz 2335 like the 2215?

I'm in agreement!

I had a pair of Concept CE-1's and can certaintly see why qboneus took an axe to his.
That Heil tweeter was so piercing and overbearing that I can see how it can drive a person crazy, maybe to the point of smashing them up with an axe!
I too, could have had a similar story as qboneus, but a nice ESS fan bought them from me saving those Concepts from the wood pile! He thinks they sound great!
BTW,according to my Orion book, the CE M's were top of the lines, retailing for $1190/pair.

It could be the Concept receiver makes the Concept speakers better. Kind of like how the HPM-100's match up really well with the SX-1250. Go off brand, and it could be hit or miss on the sound.

I stand corrected: CE-M is TOTL, CE-2 is BOTL in terms of size. In terms of drivers, I believe they all had similar, if not identical, driver configuration - one Heil AMT, one 10" (or 8") woofer and a 10" passive.

My fault.

I have seen the 1 and 2, but never the M. Would like to see photos of the M if anyone has them. Thx.

CE-M's

the CE-M's had a 12 woofer and a 15 passive and the heil was open to the back and sides of the cabinet. will post a picture after I get them repaired. not quite sure how to post a picture here, but if anyones iinterested I could email it to them

I sold my pair about a year ago. I loved the mid-bass and highs but it lacked bass in a big way. My wife and I loved the look of them.

not sure if anyone is still following this thread???
have some CE-2's I bought brand new in the 70's have rebuilt them a few times.
also picked up a pair of CE-M's a few years back and restored them.
here's the brochure for them, list all the specs and pictures.
would like to find some CE-1's to complete the collection. speaker-brochure.pdf (sportsbil.com)
