Concerts Where the Groups Didn't Match Up

One of the first big shows I saw was a free one at American U in DC. The opener was Martha and the Vandellas, followed by the Mahavishnu Orchestra (original line up). It was a great show.

Late 1976 the American Funk Ensemble "Mother's Finest" opened a show followed by Rush and then Foghat topping the bill. It was Rush's first NYC gig and half the crowd were there to see them. Mother's did their best to win the stoner crowd over, followed by a high intensity Rush show. Foghat, who were at the peak of their popularity with "Slow Ride" on the charts were plodding by comparison.

The Pyschadelic Furs opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan followed by Johnny Winter circa 1982 or '83. A little bit of culture clash on that one.

I went to a Nine Inch Nails show where TV on the Radio and Bauhaus opened. Kinda odd match-up.

I saw this poster with NIN and I thought that was a weird matchup with Bowie.

We've had u2 out here (australia) on 2 occations in the last 12 years the vertigo and 360 tours the support which i still can't believe i've seen live because i wouldn't go see them on their own were kanye west on vertigo and jay z on 360.
Shamefully trying to draw the younger audience really.

Caught an interesting show a while back with Coheed and Cambria. Backup billing was Porcupine Tree. Guess who stole the show?

Then again, C&C is still doing gigs and PT is toast ... :(

Not saying PT can't bang heads with the best of em, but I'm thinking C&C would be better matched with someone like Placebo or Screaming Trees ...

Near riot ensues, lights go out, cops swarm auditorium knock a few heads. Asleep at the Wheel disappears from stage.
Crowd finally gets what they came for and everyone left with a life-long case of severe tinnitus.
Who in the hell put that program together??

During that period KISS fans weren't going to put up with any opening act, they were there for KISS only. I ran into the same thing at a KISS show here in the Quad Cities while they were recording KISS Alive. Journey was the opening act touring in support of their first album. Some hecklers up front really pissed off Greg Rollie and he got into an argument with them. I wonder if KISS didn't have their management purposely book opening acts their fans wouldn't put up with just to get the crowd extra pumped up for when they hit the stage.

Motown meets Canadian Psych.

I can see Cold Blood, but Doug Kershaw? I always assumed that the promoters would try to have groups together that had a similar fan base.

Unusual concert pairings was Bill Graham's MO during the Fillmore era, and he didn't hesitate to bring in jazz artists. Besides Miles Davis, Charles Lloyd also did shows at the Fillmores, which led to a live album which I don't have but should probably track down. The strangest Fillmore pairing which includes a jazz artist that I've heard about is Rahsaan Roland Kirk opening for Santana at the Fillmore East. The guy who told me about it said Kirk came out with his small music store of horns, flutes and whistles hanging on his chest. He went on to say that Micheal Carrabello, the conga player for Santana got into an argument with somebody in the audience and had to be talked out of jumping into the crowd and laying a beat down on the guy.

I think Miles Davis / Grateful Dead win strangest pairing so far.

Of all the concert pairings brought up in this thread, that's the one that actually makes sense to me. Bitches Brew had just been released and out of all the Miles Davis periods I can think of, this is the absolute best fit with the Grateful Dead of 1969-70. The slow rolling grooves that supported the dense bubbling stew that is Bitches Brew isn't that much different from the open ended spaces the Dead used to jam with. IIRC, the Dead were pretty stoked to be on the same bill with Miles.

Saw Against Me! Open for the Cult in Phoenix a few years back when Against Me! Was about at the height of their game/fame. Neither set of fans appreciated each other or the other act. Was pure energy and freshness versus what looked like the same power stances and light show from decades before.

I did not attend, but in recent years they paired Brian Wilson with Jeff Beck. Now, I like both artists, but they have little in common.
