Let's face it, opening for Rush is going to be a difficult chore, but, holy ****, it's not that Primus are so bad, but just so different. They did not go down well at all. To make matters worse, I saw the concert 3 times that week. By the time I'd heard Primus for the third time, I'd have been happy to have gone deaf.
These days, I wish I'd been more attentive, because they are actually not bad at all.
James Cotton opening for Humble Pie circa '74. Actually those two went together prety well IIRC. There was also a third (opening warmup act) whose ID I no longer recall. Probably Pezband, M&R Rush, or similar local Chicago pub rock band.
Good question Sir Rob. Interesting shares to date as well.
Took in a Moody Blues concert one time and the intro act was a young Stevie Ray Vaunghan who wowed the audience with his overwhelming offering of intense earthy blues. This seemed to be such a contrast to the ethereal music I knew was to come.
At the time, I saw some strange looks from some around me, but within mins, the audience was on board with this newbie up on the stage. I think some wanted him to remain there instead of the Blues soon to play.
The MB's had a hard act to follow. The rest was history, as they say, eh?
Stevie was a shooting star who burned fiercely for a short time, but they don't last that long.
