Burnt indeed! That's the white/black side which also measures open. I guess I will be looking for a motor.

Classic signs of overvoltage, right there. Looks like AFishNeedsADualMotor.
I also had to trim some material off a plastic part of the auto off mechanism. The wedge shaped thing on the subplatter would just barely touch another part after it had pushed it back on the first or second revolution, making a quiet tick tick sound. There's a white plastic piece that needed a slightly more rounded corner so the other piece would slide past it. I'll try to take some pictures later.
There's also a local listing for a 505-3 sans headshell but another guy has 2 of them for sale. I might go shopping.

Just for posterity I will add the info to help someone else who might experience what I had in the last post.
The pics show the sub platter and belt change mechanism. The "tooth" on the sub platter is supposed to kick a little piece out of the way. It kept hitting it though and made the noise.
Basically the black swivelling part didn't move far enough because it was binding on the white plastic piece below it. It would go about 20° on the first hit, then another 20°. I tried lube etc (you can see a bit of excess) and gentle nudging but it didn't solve it completely. I eventually unscrewed the white part and used sandpaper to reshape a sharp angle into something rounder and smoother. Now the black part moves about 45° on the second tap, moving it out of the way. It now works fine, and runs quietly.

Funny thing is, I have a 505-2 that I got around the same time. It had no headshell but recently I found 2 of them locally. Since I couldn't use it I hadn't really inspected it. I might have cannibalized the 505-3 for a little part had I noticed before.
The 505-2 is missing a little spring steel part (#102) that connects the speed change lever to the belt fork assembly. Now that Organ Donor Parts is gone, I could be hunting for a while.

Necessity being a mother... I made my own. 
Having the exact part to copy from the 505-3 that I also have sure helps.
At first I tried an old Ryobi drill battery terminal but it was too stiff. Then I came across some of those metal picture frame spring clips. Still thicker, wider and longer than needed but my Dremel handled that.
The spring is still stiffer and makes for a very clicky action on the 33/45 lever but I shortened it a bit and it is slightly better. It actually works really well!
