Coral 15TX-1 Triaxial Speaker

I went to the local thrift today and saw something huge and old. Unfortunetly the grill cloth was a white fabric with a blue flower print and was hooked up to a sharp mini system.

I was kneeling down feeling around underneath the cloth (grill would not come off) to see if I can identify them when one of the employees there came and said they work great and proceeded to turn the volume up while im right next to it. I turned the volume down and asked if I could open the back up. After some talking I was able to get a screwdriver and get the back open.

It looked to be a pair of Coral 15TX-1 Triaxial speakers in the orginal cabs. I promptly bought them for the $40 listed.

Does anybody know anything about these? Also once I get them into my listening room I want to hook them up to my HK 930 receiver (using as power amp) being a 16ohm speaker will the HK run them?

I bet they are good...some old stuff is just to good for the money they cost!

Also can I get some pics of you guys's setups with them? What do you use to power your speakers in these cabs?
 
Well they look like the K15 cabinets in a home made version. Any identify marks on the back?

I have a pair with 12" Jensen drivers that I really like. I wish they had 15s. but the 12s punch enough bass for me.

I'm using a gainclone to power at the moment and have driven them with a Sherwood S-5500 and Pilot 245A tube integrated. Really liked them with the tube power and the gainclone works for the summer months.

Should be an awsome speaker with those Corals. Check out the Karlson site for some tips. Make sure they have some reflection sheets in the bottom and above the driver. The website wiil do a better job of explaining this than I can right now.

Here is a picture of what I was trying to say last night. I think the help cut down standing waves. I believe there was some at the top as well.

This is what mine looked like before the mod to get the wings out front for the cool factor.

Upon further looks, these may be actual Karlson made cabs as well. Great score. Pull the back off and shoot a few pictures for us please.

I will take pics this afternoon or tomorrow. These things are heavy.
I am listening to these right now and the corals are def. voiced for jazz and classical. They are kind of shouty at times but that might be the room also. I have to say for jazz they sound amazing. There is just a realness to the piano and horns.

Mine do have the fiberglass where it needs to be. Looking at them they are very well built.

There are no identifying marks on them but the previous owner stripped and sanded them and and refinihsed them horridly. They went through the vaneer layer on the ply wood.

Re: being 16 ohm, I'd rather try to drive that than get my amp all sweaty running a 2-ohm load!
 
I am beginning to think that the tweeter has gone bad on these speakers. Thats why I have to turn the treble up as much as I can to get some decent listening out of them.

Is there anyway to test? Are they fixable? I hope so.
 
Do the Corals have a pot for tweeter attenuation? If so give them a shot of DeOxit. My Jensens didn't work at all until I did this and replaced the lousy wire used to connect the speakers to the outside of the box.

Hey crackerkorean,

Its probably a weak cap or you might just want to rewire everything, ejfud ran into the same issues with his when we first listened to them. Figured that the tweeter was bad but replacing the old thin wiring fixed it right up.

Im sure he could elaborate. Keep your chin up, all is not lost! :thmbsp:

Are you talking about the wire from the attenuator to the speaker or the internal to the speaker? Is there anway to test to see if they bad?

There is a knob on the back of the speaker, I assume this is the attenuator? I do not have any deoxit, I guess I nee to get some.
 
Ok finally got around to turning this thing around and getting some pics.
I am really hoping the tweet is not bad. I checked the resistance across the attenuator and it went from 0 to 100ohm so I am assuming that its good and the tweet is bad.
