Coral speakers a steal? Advice?

Tough call, 1.00 isn't a lot of money but not sure if the speakers would be worth it.

If they were local to me, I would sure give them a try. Coral was a significant player in the speaker business in the early years. They made drivers for many different manufacturers on an OEM basis, just as Eminence does today.

Early corals were good, some of there OEM stuff was good. I haven't come across a good review of their Kabuki speakers, though. Admittedly, I haven't paid a lot of attention.

I think maybe this guy got these in 1969 and never cracked open a book, or got out much after that. His understanding of the 5.1 thing is great.

I believe I had a pair several years ago. Fun, but not great speakers. They give the impression of dynamism, but they don't have much deep bass and the high end is peaky. Perhaps a bit better than some Kabuki speakers, but I would be surprised if you agreed with his high esteem for them.

There used to be a fansite for Corals. Some furniture sized Corals on wheels or castors passed by on the local craigslist a few months ago. Said to be able to fill a small auditorium.

After numerous obsticals, and various circumstances, mostly people not following through. Thesse amazing speakers are available again.

Worth a listen I guess, but the fact he hasn't been able to sell them concerns me. And long elaborate stories creep me out, especially on eBay.

Coral made some darn good rock speakers. My neighbor had a pair that rocked the house. Very efficient and looked nice. His speakers had a nice lattice grille on them.

I had Coral with the 12" woofer, horn tweeter, and lattice grille pass through here. Rock the house they did and that's about as charitable as I can be in my assessment. One of those speakers that sounded better if you weren't in the same room as they were.

Some Corals were pretty good. $40 is the most I would pay though.

I had a pair of Corals that had propellers on the mid drivers. Honest.

They were very fast.

I have a pair of Coral BX-1001's around. Nice little 3 way with the lattice grilles. Nothing too special to me though.

Let me step in here and be the one to say Coral Kabuki does not sound as bad as others may portray.

It's often said here "But does it sound good to YOU?"

But every time it's a Coral-multi-driver-slagfest.

I'm sure someone will come in and explain the hows and whys of these speakers being subpar.

I just say "Give em' a listen".

Actually I thought they lacked emotion which is common for speakers of that age crying for a capacitor overhaul. So truth be told, I could not provide an honest opinion of them based on that.

I did like the propellers though.

The Coral Kabuki, like all Kabuki I have heard lacked deep bass, changed tone at every position you moved to in the room, and had no ability to image. Other than that, I suppose they were loud.

I was thinking the same thing. Didn't he have some Corals he was trying to get rid of too?

I guess that's why there's a rule to say they have no affiliation so we know they're not trying to shill their wares here too.
