Correct screw size

I need screws for a headshell. A trip to Ace Hardware, and 4-40 looks right, but the threads are different (won't screw in). Would anyone know the metric size that's closest to a 4-40?

You want 3-48 screws unless it's a Thorens head-shell which is M2.

Older Garrard head-shells like the Type A use a slightly different screw size but 3-48 works.

What head-shell are you using?

Pioneer PL-A25. 3-48 is too small,

I just happen to have a PL-A25 head-shell and 3-48 screws fit perfectly. The mounting plate is thin aluminum so I'm wondering if the threads were stripped, which can be done fairly easily, and then were re-tapped for larger screws?

I'm wondering if the screws at the hardware store were mislabeled. Threads don't looks stripped, I'll try another store and report back,
