Counterfeit 2255 glass on eBay

Seller ben8968 (in Portland) has changed his description of this counterfeit glass to include "in storage for 10-20 years old" to imply that it is NOS, which it is not. It is made offshore "shipped from overseas" is how this was described (before recent changes) and he is also changing his other counterfeit glass listings to include the "10-20 years old" description in an attempt to deceive us. Check his other listings (before he changes all of them).

It is NOT original glass, NOT made by McIntosh, has several printing and manufacturing errors discussed here previously, please do not order from ben8968. He also charges more than McIntosh.

It would be McIntosh's fight not mine if the seller were being honest about its age and source but this guy is trying to deceive us, not just infringe on McIntosh's copyright.

I reported the auction. I chose ‘Copyright and trademark’ as the Report Category, ‘Counterfit item or authenticity disclaimer’ as the Reason for Report, and ‘Counterfeit, fake, or replica items’ as the Detailed Reason.

I’m going to follow suit for all his glass. I can tell the the font used is completely wrong.

It’s only a font ? Good thing it isn’t life threatening
 
Not just the font, the registration of the lettering to holes is off in some cases also.

Regardless, there is this silly little law about copyrighted material plus the fact that the seller appears to "intend to defraud" the buyers with the implication that this is NOS/original.

Might not matter to you, but some of us do care about such things.

Seriously. The biggest issue for me is that he doesn’t indicate that it’s fake. All he has to say is reproduction or something like that. I don’t necessarily have a problem with people making copies of something the company no longer does as long as they indicate that it isn’t OEM. Regardless even still it’s probably trademark infringement.
 
There are no cutouts in the black ink for illumination of the "McIntosh" logo which is a dead giveway of not being OEM spec glass for an MC2255. Lettering doesn't appear to be gold either.
 
I asked him questions about the 7300 narrow. He swore it was old and in storage. I needed a plate and no one had the mnarrow so I sent my $215 plus $50 for shipping from Taiwan. Full report and pics on friday, comparing my original wide version and his crap-tastic asian invasion
 
Along with a couple billion light blue Covid masks they were waiting to sell us. Probably find out at some point they are made from asbestos.
 
I considered buying glass from this guy, back when he was being honest about the source (somewhat honest anyway) since McIntosh is now making the faceplates without the original look and function. Fortunately enough patience and NOS glass did show up on the auction site for me to buy and I avoided having to buy the counterfeit. This guy charges about $40 (IIRC) more than McIntosh.

I sure wish McIntosh would take notice, people still want original look and function (ALL of the gold and backlight as original, not the new cheaper versions) and we’re willing to pay, I really DON’T GIVE A CRAP if they were to raise the price $50 to give me the correct glass (over cheapening the glass as they are now) and don’t even mind if they have it produced properly by an outside vendor (there was one in the USA, but McIntosh shut them down) and ensure original quality.

This guy OTOH should be shut down.

I just spent over $700 yesterday for a pair of MC75 chrome chassis. Yes they’re aftermarket and yes I’d prefer to get them from McIntosh, but I checked and they’re not available. News flash McIntosh: We’re willing to pay for service parts and would prefer that they have the original look, quality, and if possible come from you. Make it so.

It’s pretty easy to sink $1,000++ in to a single amplifier when restoring them and it’s more emotional than financial, original McIntosh parts makes it more satisfying and price is only an issue if it gets ridiculous.

<edit> I’ll bet that if you offered original transformer cans, someone would even buy them and make a business out of re-potting transformers that have dented cans. Maybe even next door, Audio Classics? They’ve been a faithful supporter of parts and restoration, give them service parts license.

According to their website, Tom has one in stock for both the wide and narrow version. $210 ea.

As noble a cause as this is, you just have no idea of the internal hurdles to be overcome by the bean counters who always think the same - we'd prefer to sell this customer a new amplifier.
 
As I've said many times before, the numbers are simply not there to manufacture model-specific parts profitably, especially after the drain on limited resources is factored in. Mc should be commended for supporting older products for as long as it did but in the final analysis, business profitability (by extension, survival) is all that ultimately matters.

comment was for sellers honesty. Description is definitely misleading. And eBay allows negative feedback and usually sides with buyers.
