Craigs audio scam in Salisbury MD????

I got scammed by a guy selling Jensen coaxial speakers a while back. Sent the payment via family/friends per his request.

The one thing that saved me was adding in the notes "for Jensen speakers" (whatever model they were)

Since that was clearly stated in the notes, and PayPal could see the transaction, and that he never sent any item tied to that transaction to me, they refunded my money and charged him back.

I don't bother with such notes with trusted friends of course, but was definitely glad I did with an unknown scammer.

What action did PayPal take against you? And if none, why not?

I wondered that, too. Not to be an ass, but the whole friends and family thing bugs me. As a seller I'm more than willing to pay a few % points to get the protection paypal offers both parties, and it makes shipping easier too.
I get uncomfortable when people want to be paid that way not only because it's a bit of a red flag, but I think it's silly not to want what they offer for your money

I often throw in a statement that I need XXX information in order to validate a sellers identity because unfortunately, there are too many scum sucking scammers around.

Often, that is all it takes for the scammer to stop contact. Very inexpensive way to weed out scumbags. And, it gives me a minute to sit back, take stock, and review what I am doing.

Scammers also work with pressure. They will say there is someone coming this afternoon, but if you pay me a deposit, I will hold it for you until you can come and get it. Or, there are three people lined up for this item just waiting for you to back down. Bottom line is that if it is legit, the seller should be up front and willing to share something to prove he is. If the seller is evasive, then that is a warning sign.

Another thing to watch out for, is an electronics purchase where the seller doesn't want you to know where he lives. The only times I've been taken is when the item was delivered to me, or we have met at a location where it can't be tested or checked out. If the seller is too busy to make time for you to come to his place, chances are he is a scammer or selling a broken or damaged item. I pass on them.

I may even have missed out on a trade for an item I really wanted because the other party didn't want to spend the time testing the items out at my or his place. I don't mind taking that stance because it is my safety net. And in the end, I am glad the trade failed because I am now still using the item I was going to trade, and I am not willing to sell it even with a buyer prepared to pay good money for it! I guess Karma was on my side that time. :)

I think when you do enough business with PayPal/eBay, they don't hassle you too much when you have an issue. Especially with a dispute where the other party has no history or feedback.

I understand wanting to do things as family/friends. Especially when it is between friends or family. Which many times it is within a community. People are tired of getting nickel and dimed on every single thing they do. I can also appreciate the protections offered by going through PayPal and paying the fees.

There are some sellers that insist on money orders only, and don't want to mess with PayPal. For me, that's just too much of a waste of time (which translates to money) and I'd rather pay the extra fees for the convenience.

To each his own.

"Jeffrey" is not answering the phone. The address is 107 Johnson Dr. in Salisbury MD.If you google this address it's a 900 sq foot rancher. It is not the house that he described to me on the phone. He stayed on the phone with me for over 30 mins. I was suspicious but the BS was so good I fell for it

I just posted a "beware of scam Pioneer sx-1980, Sansui 9090B and Marantz 2270" listing to warn people.

I feel foolish for losing $50 but it could have been a lot worse.

I'll report it to craigs but there is probably nothing they can do.

When something on Craigs looks to good to be true it probably is.

I did pick up a pair of large Advent 5012/W speakers with near perfect cabinets for free on Craigs about two weeks ago. I got lucky on that one.

I have an Opera House in Sydney for sale if you are interested. :smoke:

So what do we do fellas? This guy is doing this nation wide and is getting a lot of money from people.

If someone wants to pay my costs of tracking this guy down I'd be willing to make him wish he never scammed anyone. Your money is gone but there could be some satisfaction knowing that he paid for his dirty deeds. :D

I don't really want to know exactly what you're implying (:smoke:), but I am academically curious what it costs to track someone down.

This guy isn't exactly hiding so it wouldn't be more than a few hundred bucks to catch up with him depending on how far I have to travel.

This probably isn't one person; these places operate like call centers without phones and are located where you can't get to them. This happens thousands and thousands of times a day all over the world.

It's times like these that I'm glad my dad didn't know how to spell "Jeffrey" correctly when he filled out my birth certificate :D

FWIW, I've never posted or responded to an ad on Craig's List, and have never even looked at ads other than the ones people post here.
