Crites question

The reason that you can't see why refurbishing an old set would be cheaper than building a new set is likely because you have not built a new set. The bonus with building new is that you can do or have done a better job than the factory did. But rebuilding an old set should also give you the ability to end up with a better than factory set if you include some value added effort and materials such as Coytee mentioned. Best regards Moray James.

PS you can buy beater LaScala for 4 500 a pair a shop built set and cabinets will be at least 800 dollars and more if you use all baltic birch. Your choice.

 With even 1" MDF running about $45 a sheet, building large speaker cabinets gets expensive fast.

I had one of those too. The St20 was England's version of the St70 by Dynaco. If you don't mind me asking what is the going price for an St20 these days? If they are more than they are worth you might be well served to cash it in and replace it with a better amp for less money. Antique Sound Labs AQ1003DHT are superb amps (PP EL34) switch out the 12AU7 for a 12BH7. Have seen them in the $600.00 range used. Best regards Moray James.

They seem to be pulling around a grand, but better isn't always better. I appreciate the history and the aesthetic as much as the sound.

well I can't say for you but I have yet to find myself in any oh my god what have I done situation having sold something and regretting it after, so far anyway. Check out one of those ASL's with a pair of 12BH7's in hand and you may have a change of heart. Never say never. Joseph Lau who owns ASL designed and built many ultra high end transformers for ARC and CJ amongst others prior to starting up ASL and his Hurricanes are highly respected designs. I have his Tulip which is a Stereo 2A3 and a very nice sounding amp. On top of all that he is alive and a very kind and approachable gentleman. I once contacted him asking about a transformer design change for one of his amps. He spent much time discussing the project with me and shortly there after contacted me to say he had built a pair of custom output transformers for me as he was interested in the outcome and would like the feedback, to my surprise they were mine for the shipping cost alone. Super guy so very into audio, has heard so much done so much and builds excellent product. Check some out if you can. Best regards Moray James.
