Crossover upgrades

Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes... I have a pair of Infinity Reference Two speakers and I've noticed one of the speakers is sounding extremely dull, like the tweeter isn't even working at all. My first guess is the capacitor is dead but I have no way of testing it. I thought about upgrading the entire crossover but I'm not exactly sure what information I need to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated....

May be the cap, may be the tweeter itself.

I would first pull the tweeter and test it with a meter (DC resistance). One or the other of its wires will need to be disconnected for accurate reading.

As for recapping, unless you can find a thread somewhere providing the capacitor details (for the Two, not for the 2!), you will need to pull a woofer to access the crossover and determine the values you need.

Gotcha, OK I'll give that a shot... I really would like to get these fixed up, they sound really good when the tweeter works! So, I'm a real newbie to speaker repair, what kind of meter should I use to read the resistance and or check if the tweeter is working?

Likely the tweeter is an open circuit. I just went through this with a pair of Infinity RS 2001 speakers. Both speakers dull and both tweeters blown. Found spare tweeters on E-Pay.

Until you pick up a meter, you can try swapping tweeters. See if they suspect tweeter works in the other cabinet? That lets you check the know good tweeter, in the suspect speaker, too. You're checking it's crossover in the process.

Man, thank you guys so much for the input... Really would like to get these speakers back up and running, like I said they sound terrific when the tweeter was working. Plus, it's fun to get involved in a project like this, even as a newbie...

OK, so switched the tweeters, it's definitely the tweeter..was looking at Parts Express, not sure which tweeters would be good replacements for these, any thoughts?

If you want to get new replacement tweeters then I would contact Parts Express directly to see what they recommend. They can tell you based on the specifications of the AR tweeter (sensitivity and crossover point). Unless you can source an exact replacement off of the Bay. They appear to be 6 ohm speakers with a 3 kHz crossover point if I am not mistaken. Of course there may be better tweeters than Polycells but I don't know...

Check the numbers on the back of the tweeter and then check Ebay because there are some Polycell tweeters available there.

I will do that turboyam... that's kind of what I've been thinking after looking over all the different options...i would like to keep these the way they came.

I'd really like to keep the original type, but not opposed to "upgrading" them... I'm going to send an email to the tech dept there.. they're usually pretty good at getting back to you...
