Crown Power Amp Advise

Hi everyone. I may be straying off the beaten path here a little but think i would like to try a big Crown Power Amp....one that would kick out at least 600 wpc @ 8 ohms stereo.........maybe as many as 1,500. This would not be for PA or professional just for a 2ch home system. I currently have Pioneer Spe 2, Mac mc 2300, Sansui BA/5k i am just wondering how the Crown amps would hold up against these in a home environment? I know that Crown has a really good reputation for quality and that is about all i know. Problem is there are hundreds of different models of Crown power amps for sale. Can anyone give me suggestions of a couple models to watch out for that would do well for this purpose? I would like to buy used and keep price under 1k. Thanks so much in advance!

I run AB amps, which can considered on-par with Crown. They were technically sold as "PA" or "band" amplifiers, but in all reality they are just big brutes.

My AB 9620b is a daily listener and the poor thing rarely goes beyond 5-10 wpc output to keep neighbors happy, but once a home is procured it'll get it's legs stretched a bit.

Anyhow, there are some things you'll want to consider with these types of amplifiers.

1. They NEED a legit preamp. The output from a typical PC won't cut it. I went through this with mine, and even though it has several line level presets, it would never make rated wattage from just the PC. What's odd though is I tested several car amplifiers in-house and set their gain as low as it'd go, and the pre-out from the PC had them doing rated wattage. Usually band amps have mixers, etc. So if you want to actually hit the rated wattage figures, get a preamp. If one of your existing amps has in/out jumpers, you can use that as a preamp, but you'll be adding adding wear and tear to it.

2. These amps use XLR connectors almost exclusively. I bought some XLR ends at Radioshack (when they still had them in their bins) and cut the ends off some higher end RCA cables and soldered them into the XLR ends. You can buy actual adapters, but they cost more. I've had no issues with this.

3. If you try bridging one or running 2 ohm stereo on 120v, you'd better have your electrician come out and update the breaker, and possibly run a 200 amp box if you only have a 100 amp box now. My amp, if pushed at it's limit, can pull something like 32 amps and would be like running 2 blow driers at once. Not to mention I have a preamp, EQ, PC, TV, etc. all on at same time, so plan accordingly.

4. 600 wpc powering modest 91 SPL full-range speakers (or better) would be extremely uncomfortable for casual listening unless you have a movie theater-sized listening room and are throwing a party. If you are only going to use the amp for subs, and you are running a pair of DVC subs with an 85 SPL, you probably still won't be pushing them at their limit as you won't hear vocals, etc. You could always try running some type of active bass boost crossover and run the amp 16 ohm and still have enough bass to rival most cars with subs, especially if you use walls to deflect the bass back as it can actually increase db. There's a name for the effect, but I don't know what it's called. If you like really tight kick-drum bass, put subs about an 1" from a walled surface or put a 3/4" pressboard in front of the box, and listen to the difference.

5. If you have say a 3 way design with 5 speakers per cab in stereo, it'll soak up some of the wattage, but you'll probably find 16 ohm @ 300 wpc will be just as effective as 600 wpc @ 8 ohm, and the amp will be using LESS power from the wall at 16 ohm vs. 8ohm. The lower the impedance, the hotter it'll run and the more power it'll need.

6. Car amp makers have brainwashed so many people with false advertising it's not even funny. (not saying you are) By this, I mean they plaster stupid high wattage values on their amps and even their speakers, and people think their 1800w amp is legitimately powering their speaker. In most cases, it's not and probably lucky to be 200w. To put things into perspective, back in the early 90's when car audio was getting big, you could have 150 wpc amp @ 4 ohm powering a pair of 95 SPL single voice coil subs with small magnets and running an inline bass boost crossover, and people could hear you over a block a way. Run four 10" 95 SPL at 150 watts each, and you could be heard a couple blocks away and rattle peoples windows as you passed by in the street. Nowadays, DVC subs are like 84 SPL and they actually need crazy wattage just to get as loud as the smaller systems from 25 years ago. Why? Because there's more money spent on big wattage numbers and they've painted themselves into corners with ridiculous claims over the years. Point I'm trying to make is, if you specifically hand-pick high SPL speakers for cabs (I consider 92 SPL or better to be high), you can have 150 wpc classic SS class A/B amp and be plenty loud. Ignore the speaker SPL and get 85 SPL, and it'll need a bunch more power.
 
BTW, if you wanted to push a big amp like this to it's limit, most can be internally reconfigured for 240v. If the amp can pull a max of 25 amp at 120v, it'd pull closer to 12.5 amp at 240v.
 
Under normal use it's no big deal.

Even when you have the clipping lights a flickering on a 600-700 wpc amp, bear in mind the average power is only about 1/8 to 1/10 of that. So, yes, they do draw some righteous peak amps when cranked up, but a 15A or 20A standard circuit can deliver several times that for covering the peaks.

For example, my QSC PLX 3402s are rated 1,100wpc @ 4 ohms, yet the average power at rated program output is listed as something like 11.5A on the back panel. If you look at the full specs, max current draw is WAY more than that, but you never see that type of continuous draw unless you're doing full power sine wave bench testing.

For my HT, I run two PLX 3402 and two PLX 2402 on two 20A dedicated circuits. Never have, and don't expect I ever will, pop the breakers. This even despite an occasional short term expedition to where clipping indicators occasionally flicker.

Yup, contrary to popular belief, higher impedance speakers are more efficient. It is a matter of ampere turns. Amperes times turns. It is just a matter of getting more voltage to them.

Actually at the low end of the spectrum, Bose has has had some luck with super low impedance. The drivers in the 901s are like 0.8 ohms. I read they are rectangular aluminum wire wound on edge on the voice coil. I have not take one apart to verify this. On edge means the high way, not the flatter, easier way. I don't even want to think about the friggin manufaturing process to get that done. I mean with aluminum ! Copper would be alot easier. I THINK they used aluminum for the less mass, which means better HF response. Remember with all they did, their EQ had to boost the treble by like 18 dB.
 
Can get a brand new Cerwin Vega CV-5000 for $850. Seems like a lot of power for the money? I guess CV is not any good.
 
The Crown XLS 5000 was one that was recommended to me...anyone have any thoughts?


It's an old school type, big iron amp. Lots of power and heavy. That makes it a shoe-in in many circles. Never heard one so can't comment directly on the sound. It doesn't have any particularly noteworty specs other than power. On the other hand, some really big name, well-regarded amps don't have particularly noteworthy specs.

It's not likely to go well with high sensitivity speakers in low noise floor situations because it's not exceptionally quiet. Other than that, it will perform like a big amplifier.

Personally, I have a few different Crown amps and a few different QSC amps. Of those I have, top to bottom/full range, I keep coming back to the QSCs. That's not to demean Crown, just my take on things.
 
I too am wondering what the op will use such an amp on.

Which when talking about these types of amps and brands brought up, old school kinds, many are often class h power supply based, a&b and qsc for example.

Its often brought up in threads pertaining to the big sound craftsmen and sae amps, which are also often h based, how despite showing an increase in wattage when going from 8 to 4 ohms they decrease in voltage. I was wondering if that also holds true with these old pro amps from the afore mentioned?

If so would such an amp be the best choice if used for sub duty with 4 ohms or less even? Stereo mode but amp could be fed a mono signal just hypothetical.

Ive often wondered this. Im not there yet in my understanding of all this. Again sticking with older tech the choices get fewer in the higher power depo. 600 or more. I own an ab 1100a amp and wonder how it would stack up against a macro 2400 and what each is better suited for.

Clearly each design has its plus and minus. And in terms of power today wow have things opened up with options.

I know you said 600w but the difference between 300w and 600w is only a 3db increase in sound level. The Crown XLS-2500 drivecore series does 440w at 8ohms and it has built in dsp control and RCA inputs so you wouldn't need special interconnects. Plus it is $599 brand new so it is in your budget.

Bear in mind the I-Tech is one of Crown's TOTL amps, eg IT 5000 is probably a $4000-5000 amp brand new. The XLS 5000 is a fraction of that. Not to say it's not durable, but it's not an apples comparison.
 
If you want to go vintage, the ones to look for by order of sound/build quality are the Crown Reference (two models), the PSA-2s (a few models), and the DC300s (a few models). My PSA-2XH still performs like new.
 
only crown amps with that kind of specific rms power are the CE4000 and XTI 4002... i own xti 4002 and love it. it has tons of clean power and sounds very nice. used it for full range once and really liked it. liked it even more on subs cause it's ridiculous output power capability and power rating fits my needs. handles low impedance no sweat either without missing a beat. i never had issues with it past several months owning it.

thing is, it might be out your price range maybe since it does retail for 999 brand new but, there is some sites that will work out monthly payments for you if wanted. just some sites go by credit. american music supply is one company i know of(actually local to me too) which works things out even if credit is not the greatest.
 
i see where you can get the Crown IT 5000 you mentioned for $1,800 on the Auction site with a one year warranty. Yes i really did not want to go that much but if it is TOTL. I will tell you all where this is coming from...so far in my short audio journey i have yet to see a downside to power. I have AR 9 speakers being re foamed now which will be new to me....always hear reports on them say you need lots of power to get the most out of them..."clean power, power, power". I have spent a truckload on "powerful" vintage receivers in the 120-200 watt range and 100lbs+ vintage power amps that put out 300 watts per side. I have been considering a Mac mc 2500 that is for sale locally for a bunch of dollars. I guess at some point a light bulb came on and i thought to myself "maybe there is a better and more cost effective way"? A way to satisfy these power thirsty speakers that will deliver quality sound, does not weigh 100lbs plus, and does not break the bank. I do not know because i have never owned a "pro" amp...just wanted to try.

The above was an example of some power hungry speakers that a man makes not far from here. I do not have them either but a couple examples as to what i would want to put a big crown to work on in the future.
 
I own a Crown MicroTech 2400. I can't tell it apart from my MC2300 when driving subs - at least up to the point at which the MC2300 runs out of gas. The Crown has more than double the power when used at 2 Ohms per channel.
