Crown RTR, Fisher tuner, & a stack of Technics TT's

I walked over to an odd's & ends shop (no affiliation)next door to work last night that have been in the process of opening now for about a year. They gave me a mini tour of the place, which lasted about an hour & a half! During the course of the tour, I mentioned that I'm into vintage stereo gear, they showed me two FULL shelf units of stereo gear. I had to try really hard not to hit my chin on the floor. :jawdrop:

Amongst the BPC, they had three Technics TT's: an Sl-1300, SL-B303, and an SL-D2. They also had a Harman/Kardon HK720 TT. All had dustcovers, and without unstacking them all, they all appeared to be in pretty good shape.

They had a Fisher 100-r tuner, the one with AM/FM separated channels. No case, but looked acceptable.

The crown jewel (pun intended) was a Crown 2ch RTR. I searched through pictures this morning, and I think it is a GCSX. It looks identical to this one:

. It needs a bath, and most likely a rebuild.


I'd like to upgrade TT's if it is worth it. I am currently running a Sony PS-LX250H: a plastic-plinth el-cheapo unit that I bought used for $40 four years ago. Which TT in that stack would you recommend? What would you pay for it considering the cart is unknown?

I am thinking of making an offer on the Crown RTR if for no other reason than I couldn't stand to leave that gorgeous piece of engineering behind. Considering the condition, and the fact that it's operational status is completely unknown, what would be a decent offer on it?

Well, the SL-1300 is a work horse full automatic table. Of those I would pick that one .
 
I would grab them all if they're cheap and flip the the Technics' on Craigs and keep the HK. One sold on US Audiomart for $150, and they look cool. I wouldn't take the Crown for free unless it had been recently serviced, which is highly improbable.

Why the HK? I will agree they look nice, which is a strong selling point with me. Are there any performance advantages the HK has that the Technics do not?

I figured the Crown was going to be a major project. I've never dealt with RTR before, so it aught to be a learning experience for sure. What specifically turns you away from it?
 
Did you look that RTR up on the 'bay? Cuz I did... If it was near here, I'd be havin' it by now... :)

Sweet, I'll give him a ring, see if he has any tips as to what to look out for. I've never worked on one before, so I'd like to do as much work as I am confident I can perform at an acceptable level.

I did. The prices were all over the higher end of the board. Not the kind of money i can gamble with. IF I can get that Crown for dirt cheap, then I'll gamble with it.

Cool, seems a lot of people like that TT. I'll definitely bid on that one. Any others worth bidding on?
