Culling the vinyl collection is tougher than I expected

Back a year or so before Covid sold off in two rounds my "to sell" records. The restocking boxes were in the first go round then the take to show boxes. Keeping back a stash of prime duplicates of the stuff I listen to and the rare collectables for just in case down the road.

Boxed them up and stored out of the way. Have Grandsons digging into them now. From my experience locally when LP's are donated to the library they are sold to a collector soon there after. The radio station I listen to will have a culling sale of media from time to time.

There are people on FBMP that will buy them. Do try and sell as a lot not picked over. That way they are gone. If you decide to ship then there is aways Barter Town here.

Agreed. I have more of a problem with books than with vinyl or CDs. I’m regularly donating boxes of books (I get a lot for free in my line of work). Recently, I had just culled a whole section on a subject in which I had little interest and thought I’d never need again. Guess what. Turns out that I had to go out and spend $70 on a book I had just given away. (It wasn’t the first time.) So…you never know.

On another note, after my brother spent $13K on a new CDT and DAC (he’d been listening only to vinyl and FM), he eagerly dove back into and began to substantially increase his CD collection, which had been in storage for two decades. So…you just never really know…

I have hit that point in my life, where I don't want to leave a mess for my family to deal with when my time comes. I will be going through LOTS of sh%t....um ...stuff in the near future....plan on donating to AK in the new area....giving some to friends I have here....maybe even going to my LRS and see if they want some. My daughters, step son, grand son and a few friends all have systems I gave them....and I still have stuff. I have to get myself in the 'mood' of just getting rid of things. It is not something that is real easy but once it is gone I am happy.

About 30 years ago I decided to give my Sansui Receiver, Sansui speakers, Technics turntable that I bought overseas while in the service, and all but a few of my albums (about 100) to my nephew. Because I was getting into surround sound for the TV. About three years ago I started getting back into HiFi. So I had to start all over. I enjoy vintage equipment. It seems that a lot of times when I get rid of something, years later I regret it. I go through phases.Years ago I sold a brand new M1A rifle in order to get a motorcycle. Still have the motorcycle even though I don’t ride it much anymore, but I sure regret getting rid of that rifle.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I'm slowly selling bits and pieces online, it's painfully slow. Last year I put an ad on Facebook Marketplace, selected a dozen respondents told them to arrive at 10am on Saturday. By the end of the day most records were sold . One buyer came back at the end of the day and bought all the rest for one price. I'm sure I let a couple of pricey records go for little money but I got rid of approximately 500 records in one day and was glad I did. The biggest downside was listening to a couple of buyers tell seemingly endless stories about what various albums were their favorite.

I had given up on LP's back around 2000. I gave my whole collection to one of my sons. Then, I bought a couple new turntables about eight years ago and I've been buying records ever since. A couple weeks ago while at my sons house I went digging through my old collection and dug out a pile of albums he didn't want. So clearly moving on from vinyl records didn't work out for me. And its pretty sad when you dig out a pile of records to take home from a collection you had given away years earlier. :whip:
