curb-find speaker identification

I found a pair of floor-standing speakers on the curb outside a neighbour's house this morning, piled them into my truck and set them up at home. They don't look like much, but they sound pretty damn fine. The cones are pushed in but I don't notice any issues with sound quality. I currently have them hooked up to my secondary tuner, a Kenwood KR-A5020 (60W). Next I'll try them with my main amp, a Tandberg 2075 (75W).

Anyway, I'm curious about the brand and wonder if they might be homemade. There's no manufacturer info on either speaker though there's a serial number and an "inspected by" label on the back of one of them. Only one of them has a screen (wrapped, not pop-out), and it has what looks like glue where a manufacturer's label might once have been. I'll try and attach a photo or two, though the room is dim and my camera is crap. Any help with identification would be appreciated. It won't change how I feel about them (I love them because they sound good and they were free), but I am curious. They're heavy, probably about 40 lb., and measure 32" h x 11" w x 14.5" d. Thanks in advance! And apologies if I've posted this to the incorrect forum.

PS It's been a good curbside summer for me. My main speakers are Duntech Opals, which another neighbour threw out earlier this summer. I can't figure out why. They sound tremendous and have only a few dings.

Well for starters that tweeter is not straight in the cabinet suggesting home brew or replacement.
 
What is that object I can see in the port?
Might have some info, or more likely may have info that might identify the tweeter.

Looking thru the port and seeing the insides and seeing the wires hanging down shows there's not much insulation. It might not be a good sign.

Doesn't matter in the least. The amount of "insulation" in a speaker is determined by the design equations, and lots of the stuff does not reflect on quality at all.

There is a serial number on the back of one of the speakers, A496447. In case that helps.

I know. It's shocking what people throw away. I've given away items of value or have donated them, but wouldn't put them out with the garbage. Imagine something of such beauty that sounds so fantastic being trod upon by bears and flies in a landfill somewhere. I'm making much better use of them than that. I wouldn't have been able to afford them in a shop.

I think it's just dust. As others say, I'm wondering now if they're upside down.

They sound fantastic. I might finally have an excuse to buy a second TT, and maybe even that souped-up Marantz I've been eyeing . . .

Looks pretty straight to me. All the drivers screws line up. They look commercially made to me. Boutique or white van, hard to say. Maybe pull a driver and post some pics of the drivers and crossover, which may yield some info.
 
Someone should invent something like facial recognition for speakers. That would take away all this guess work. As they say if they sound good to you that's all that matters really. BTW you didn't mention if they had grill covers and what shape there in. After a good cleaning you gots nice a set speakers.
 
An old post by now but the mystery has been solved, at least to my satisfaction, by Frank at the Speaker Shop on Bridgeland in Toronto. He's convinced they're Signets, but isn't sure of the model, and thinks he might have sold them new. He says they're pretty decent speakers and I agree! Frank gave them a look over and found no issues, other than needing to replace the dust caps. They also need new grill cloth and I opted to recloth them myself as Frank said it's too expensive for him to do it (he really seemed to not want to take my money). Anyway, these will be my second set of floorstanding speakers to accompany my Duntech Opals on my newly acquired Sansui QRX-6500 quad amp. It's too cold to regrill them now. I'm listening to my also newly acquired a/d/s CM6 bookshelf monitors. I generally can't be bothered with bookshelfs but these are amazing speakers.

Oh--anyone have any idea of the Signet model? I got distracted by the rich warmth on the CM6s hooked up to my Sansui 800.
