D100 disappointments

As this thread is resurrected - I'll add my 2 cents. I use the D100 USB input with JRiver audio player. JRiver is set to use ASIO (kernal based). I hear a very slight noise from the speakers if I put my ear right next to them and the C2300 is set to 25 or above (and no music is playing). But, absolutely not noticable from my listening position.

I'm not sure if the synergy helps: D100->C2300->MC7270, but I've never heard digital sound this good before.

If the Mac has more bass and is more focused and the other unit is more dispersed and thinner it sounds like one of the balanced outputs is out of phase with the other. Make a special cable with the polarity of pins 2 and 3 reversed and see what happens.

No imagination. And it is not necessarily a problem with the computer, as it is inherently noisy. Switching power supplies, constant changes of draws of power from elements that are installed such as hard drives, fans, antennae (bluetooth, IR, wireless) all impact quality of sound. And no I don't mean it changes the bits in the music file, but it adds common mode noise that will happily flow downstream.

Here is a nice video showing common mode noise impact that is measurable using an oscilloscope.

This guy does a lot of informative and educational videos.

I have a meter for EMI and RFI: PCs, Cell phones, cordless phones, and florescent bulbs frequently peg the meter, the 2205 has a pretty good magnetic field. The plumes on some of these are surprising, especially the new florescents that are replacing the incandescent bulbs.

I like the USB protocol (I have a data background) and hadn't considered the switching power supply for the PC as a source, I'll have to look at it.

There is definitely a bright sound when I use my DAC with the PC, so this is as good a place as any to start looking. I think I'll try running off of just battery to begin the quest. With headphones the C-32 sounds like the speakers, so the problem is upstream from the C-32, maybe jacking into the PC will yield some information too. Too bad my DAC doesn't have a headphone jack.

Thanks

I have 275V1 with the C2200 and D100 hooked up to the 2200. Fantastic combination. The D100 is really good preamp, but where it really shines IMO is a DAC.

Just streaming music the D100 sounds better than my MDA1000. Haven't done a redbook CD comparison yet, but I consider the MDA1000 one of the best redbook DACS ever.

I think you're probably the first person I've heard about to say the D100 sounds better than the MDA1000, albeit via streaming.
Are you streaming internet music or your own files from a remote hard drive?
Be sure to let us know your impressions of a redbook CD comparison.

BTW, love your Vandy Quatros.

I have been very lucky. I hear no noise at all.

I have JRiver on Mac Mini -->USB 2.0 cable (DH Labs)-->D100
MCD500 -->dig.coax out cable (Morrow)-->D100
MCD500-->fixed analog out cables (Morrow)-->MX121 Pre-Pro (for SACD)
Sonos Connect-->dig. toslink cable(DH Labs)-->D100
iPod-->RAL Audio DDC-->dig. coax cable(Morrow)-->D100

I run everything from D100-->fixed balanced out cables (Emotiva)-->MX121 Pre-pro

Again, so far so awesome...:music:

Streaming internet radio, Ipad and Powerbook. Not that the MDA doesn't sound really good streaming, I just think the D100 adds a little punch. Remember the MDA was developed before streaming music was mainstream. I bought the MDA1000 and MCD1000 after they had been out for a year. Still have my MCD1000 in the original box in my closet. One of the great redbook combinations of all time.
