Dahlquist M909 speakers

I think the M was for Marchisotto. Carl designed these. They should have butyl surrounds. It's possible they may have used foam at some point in time. Excellent speakers....:yes: More information in another thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=73477

I still have my M909s that I picked up at Value Village for $5.95 each!!! there was a blown fuse in the back, so the tweeter didn't work.

I was playing my Carver MXR 150 ($14.95 at a different V.V.) through them. They took the watts no prob and were wonderfully warm. I loved the idea that I had all of that quality for about $30!

Two months ago I went to still a different V.V, which is usually a waste of time, and I saw an Adcom GFA 545 (first series) taped together with an Adcom GTP 400 preamp/tuner, both for about $40. The amp also had a blown internal fuse. I replaced it and all works perfectly!

I dropped about 50 watts with the Adcom swap, but I think the clarity improvement to be a wonderful trade. (The Carver is not bad, mind you, but the Adcom is amazing).

I guess the moral of my story is this; sometimes living in a disposable society has advantages for those of us who can opperate a screw driver!!!

What do you mean image?

you can google imaging to find the exact definition..
but it just means to hear where things are supposed to be located in the room from your music..
does it sound like there is really a piano over there, and yet trumpets in the other corner??

its like what the 5.1 systems are trying to achieve with a speaker in each corner..
the music creates a image of where certain sounds should be within your listening area.

Dahlquist M909's

I have to say, I'm more in love with these speakers than when I first got them. I've since been lucky enough to find at goodwill:

Pair of Bose 901's series 2 with equalizer: $30
Pair of KLH Model six: $30
Pair of Cerwin Vega D-3: $10 (single at garage sale)
(if anyone has a single d-3 they want to sell let me know)

Although the above sound very nice, the Dahlquist 909's beat all three hands down in my humble opinion. If anyone reading this has an opportunity to get a pair of these....run, don't walk!

They are amazingly efficient. I'm powering them with my little Marantz model 2010 with 10 watts per channel!

Where is the crossover?

I concur on the rubber surrounds and "goop" on the woofers. Possibly someone replaced the woofers or at least the dustcaps? Aren't the woofers and tweeters available, but the midranges no longer available? Anyway, do any of you all know where the crossover is located? I would like to recap if old electrolytics, but it was not on the binding post plate on mine. I would hate to start taking them apart if someone already knows where to find the crossover. Thank you in advance for any help.

As far as their sound: I like the treble and midrange quite a lot. Most of the time the bass is also good, but these speakers can be a little sloppy with the low bass if the recording has too much of it. I am using an Adcom 545 so I don't believe it's the amp. Mine don't image like my little Maggies do, but the Maggies are out of service for a while and the 909s are doing their best.

Mine were also GW finds and I did a little dance when I got them home and found someone on the internet asking about the RTV on the woofers (they look like a clueless repair job if you don't know better). All drivers are in great shape, cabinets are fair and binding post plates are starting to crack by the screwholes.

Anyone have a crossover schematic?
