They are both integral parts of what made Pink Floyd the greatest band ever, and it never would have been without both of them.
You need Waters' intellect,lyrics, spite and humanity and Gilmour's soul/feeling/musicianship, tone and simplicity to make it all work.
Gilmour's work without Waters is fraught with meaningless, directionless lyrics and sloppy songwriting and Waters' work without Gilmour is still awesome because of Jeff Beck! (I Love Amused To Death) .... but seriously... much of it is missing the beauty and feeling that's needed to balance Water's sharp wit and sarcasm. The Final Cut Is one of the most beautiful albums ever. Gilmour's guitar work is excellent on the Final Cut.
That I think sums up my feeling to a "T", well put. If you could keep two very different, clever and arrogant people together, what would we have today musically. They did make a few lawyers rich though.
