Gilmour's work without Waters is fraught with meaningless, directionless lyrics and sloppy songwriting and Waters' work without Gilmour is still awesome because of Jeff Beck! (I Love Amused To Death) .... but seriously... much of it is missing the beauty and feeling that's needed to balance Water's sharp wit and sarcasm. The Final Cut Is one of the most beautiful albums ever. Gilmour's guitar work is excellent on the Final Cut.

That I think sums up my feeling to a "T", well put. If you could keep two very different, clever and arrogant people together, what would we have today musically. They did make a few lawyers rich though.

If the guitarist of the band was always showing up completely wasted on drugs I would fire him too. Gilmour was a backup for those times when Barrett was so messed up he would just stand there like a fool. Thankfully they eventually got rid of him and the band evolved into something that wouldn't have died out with the 60's.

Kind of agree...

However, it must have been extremely hard to throw-out the one individual who was responsible for the unique sound and initial success the band enjoyed.

It's weird ....

I see Roger Waters doing Pink Floyd and all I can think is, where's David Gilmour? I see David Gilmour doing Pink Floyd and all I can think is, where's Roger Waters?

It's not Floyd without Waters & Gilmour together.

To answer the OP, it's like you are asking me to pick between my son & daughter. They are both equally responsible for bringing a smile to my face and a warm feeling in my heart.

It's quite telling that fir both Roger and David, the popularity of their solo shows is almost entirely built upon the popularity of the work they did together. Neither has made much of an impact alone (though I do enjoy some of both of their solo works).
 
I was always a huge waters fan -- but I have been captivated by with gilmours concert at the shipyard. He is genius.

I'm a Dave fan. Rodger has jumped the shark by redoing The Wall every imaginable way. I do like some of Rodger's work.

Let's put it this way , I can listen to Waters with Gilmour . I can Listen to Gilmour without Waters . I cannot listen to Waters without Gilmour .
 
While I feel David Gilmour is an incredible musician, I'd choose Roger Waters every single time. For me, he is Pink Floyd. He contributed the finest writing and conceptual material the band ever made. "The Final Cut" may be the most valuable audio experience I've had.............ever.
 
Wow - thought provoking. I have to go with Gilmour here because he attempted to transform Pink Floyd from the life sucks, Syd is dead and we hate being British to a bit more of a great progressive rock band. Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell are two great records without the hang yourself guilt.

As far as talent goes, Gilmour is an amazing guitarist with a very unique sound. While I enjoyed seeing Doyle Bramhall, Snowy White and Andy Fairweather Low burning on PF classics, David did it all on his own!

Pink Floyd has always hired extra stage musicians. In fact Snowy White played with PF before RW. :yes:
